Johnny NAMES -- Hoisington Dispatch -- Thursday, September 26, 1889
On last Saturday morning Mr. and Mrs. A. B. NAMES were called upon to mourn the sudden and very sad death of their only son, Johnny, almost eleven years of age. In the morning Johnny took a favorite colt that had been used but little, saddled and bridled it and taking the picket rope left home, while Mr. NAMES went out to mow grass. The father cautioned the boy not to venture too much with the colt but to stay near where he was mowing. However the boy went another direction. In about two hours Mr. NAMES had occasion to use the saddle and went to the house after it. Johnny was not there so the father climbed to the top of the windmill and saw the colt standing near the railroad track. Going after the colt he discovered that his boy had become entangled in the rope and dragged until dead..... No one saw the unfortunate occurence. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire neighborhood.
