Chara Wilson
celebrates 103 Years
Clara Wilson celebrated her
103rd birthday at the Chase
County Health and
Rehabilitation Center on
Thursday, Aug. 15. The native
Chase Countian was joined by
a small group of friends at the
center for the celebration.
Clara was born at her fami-
ly's home on Den Creek (about
three miles west of Bazaar).
She was one of three children
born to Arthur and Effie
Wilson.
Clara attended grade school
at the Prairie Hill Grade
School about three miles from
her home. She also attended
two years of high school at
Cottonwood Falls.
While attending high school
she boarded with a Mrs.
Griffith in Cottonwood Falls
and returned to the farm on
weekends and in the summer.
Most of her life was spent
working on the farm with her
brother, Ivan, and sister, Ruth.
Neither she nor her siblings
ever married.
Friends remember that
Clara did most of the house
keeping while Ivan worked the
pastures and Ruth the garden.
She also spent some time in
Emporia working at a sorority
as a housekeeper until she and
her brother and sister moved
to their Cottonwood Falls
home on Locust Street in the
1970s.
Clara remained at the
house on Locust until moving
to the center in April of 1995.
She comes from a long-lived
family: her mother saw 95
years and her siblings were
both in their nineties before
passing.
Clara said the secret of living to so ripe an age
"...depends on the kind of life
you want to live."
