     1916

     Apr 18 1916 - Nearly sixty pupils of the district schools of Chase Co. took part in the county wide spelling and ciphering contest. The first place spelling winner was , Lula Rayer of the Canaan school and the ciphering was Opal Gaddie of the Bazaar school.

     Carnations sixty cents per dozen, pansies finest on earth fifty cents per dozen - M. H. Lewis, Strong City.

     Apr 21 - New Hope school district elected two new school board members, Mr. Parks and Sherman Tittle.

     Toledo school district No. 9 elected Wes Myers as director and expect to build a new school house before school commences this fall.

     Apr 25 - The new fire siren has a weak voice and will likely be dismounted, packed and shipped back to the factory.

     John Pratt of South Fork, is just completing one of the most commodious little barns ever erected in this section of the county. It is 26 x 45 feet with a basement of the same size. John knows just how to do it.

     Construction work on the new Y.M.C. A. Lodge which will be the first building erected at the new State YMCA camp at Elmdale has just started. An artifical lake will be made by putting a dam across Middle creek, beautiful stream crossing the camp site. It is estimated that $6,000 will be expended in building this dam.

     4-28 - Burglers broke into the clothing store of Gregory Bros. and the Brown Furniture store.

     Ed Brandley, the jeweler, is preparing to commence at once the erection of a large stone building on the lot now occupied by his jewelry shop and the room in which the Mailen & Ward barber shop has been located.

     L. W. Heck has just completed a very neat job of painting the front of the Chase County National Bank.

     May 2 - Fenner B. Hunt, a resident of this county for forty-seven years, and one of the foremost men during the early political years of the county, died at his home. He never married.

     Mailen & Ward will soon have a new barber shop in the basement the Chase County National Bank. A front entrance thru what is now one of the basement windows will lead to the room.

     May 5 - Laura Dean was the teacher at Union school this last term. Mildred Hayden taught at the Patton school.

     A graduating class consisting of forty-five students which is one of the largest ever graduated from the Chase County High school.

     A. P. Brickell just sold his 800 acre ranch which he has lived on for forty-three years. He and his family will move to Saffordville for the present. He has been the Treasurer of Chase county for two terms from 1907 - 1911.

     Work commenced last week for the building of the new school house at Clements. The old stone building has been torn down, and the excavating for the basement of the new building has begun.
