     1916

     Sep 29 1916 - The opening football game of the Chase County High School will be held on the Cartter field. J. W. Henry is the coach and some of the team members are; R. E. Blackburn, R. G. Ice, L. E. Umbarger, L. H. Hayden, F. B. Howard and the subs are Forney and Bocook.

     Henry Schrumpf, south of Cottonwood Falls, is installing an acetelene lighting system in his house and all his farm buildings.

     Oct 3 - Applicants for naturalization filed at the Chase County Clerks office were; Albert Matti of South Fork, born in Switzerland, James Robertson of Fox Creek his daughter Miss Helen Robertson, born in Scotland, and Miss Christine Lind of Saffordville, born in Denmark.

     The large farm house of Henry Williams of Cedar Point, was completely destroyed by fire. It was valued at about $4,000, which was one of the best in the Cottonwood valley.

     Oct 6 - FOR SALE- Feathers, 40 cents per pound. Mrs Clarence Wood, Elmdale.

     Oct 10 - Clifford Bocook has purchased the interest of Wm. Wood in the Gem Theatre.

     The biggest "Pep" meeting ever held by the high school studens and faculty was pulled off on Broadway, preceeding the game with the Emporia Highs.

     Homes have been found for all the six little Nichols children whose mother recently died and whose father was not in a position to care for them.

     The six month old, twenty-seven pound son of Mr. & Mrs Connacher, Leroy, took first place in the baby contest held at the Middle Creek Fair.

     Oct 13 - Mrs Walter Whitlock who has been running the Santa Fe cafe in Cottonwood Falls, opposite the Exchange National Bank, has just rented the Central Hotel and will continue the restaurant business in it in the future.

     Oct 17 - Mrs Joseph Stone, 75 years of age and a resident of Chase County since 1863, died at her home in Saffordville after a long illness.

     Some of the Middle Creek Fair premiums awarded are; Best team of mules: Sam Miser of Bazaar; 1st., Pony race, J. M. Miller; 1st. In the horse races Potter Bros. of Cottonwood Falls, won both 1st. and 2nd. in the 80 yard run.

     John M. Warren who was one of the oldest and best known school teachers died at his home in California.

     The dam at Camp Wood is being erected Fred Coe of Cottonwood Falls is incharge of the erection.

     Oct 20 - N. Gosler of Matfield Green and his wife have just presented to the new rural township one and one-fifth acres on which will be the site of the new rural high school shortly to be built. Work will soon start on this project.

     James C. Fisher of Cedar Point, died at Topeka as a result of cancer. After coming to Chase County he married Miss Emily Pinkston of Cedar Point. Mr. Fisher worked on the Jones ranch near Cedar Point.

     Oct 24 - Harry Brandley's lifeless body was found at his home several miles southest of Matfield. . Mr. Brandley's death was due to heart trouble. Harry was the son of Captain and Mrs Henry Brandley.
