     1916- 1917

     Dec 5 -1916 - West-Houghton sell their lumber company of Dowell-Harman Lumber Co.

     J. A. Reifsnyed of Strong City has just purchased the interest of Chris Ahlschwede in the Strong City Garage.

     Dec 8 - Mrs Catherine Obley, formerly of Saffordville, died at Emporia. Son, John C. Obley is a resident of the Saffordville community.

     The members of the 1916 Chase County High School football team and coach were entertained in a fine manner, with a banquet at the home of Mr. & Mrs B. F. Howard.

     G. E. Capwell has over seven and one-half tons of honey now stored in his bee houses, in this city and it's the results of a summer's work of the 200 swarm of bees.

     Dec 15 - The fifieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. & Mrs Alexander Glennie of Strong City was celebrated at their home.

     A cable fence has been placed in front of the Prairie Hill school house, which is quite an improvement.

     Another snow, and Boo! It is cold.

     Dec 19 - A meeting was held to make final plans for the Chase County Farm Bureau.

     Ed Norton, of Bazaar, has been choosen as one of the U. S. jurors on the petit jury list for the January term of the United States district court for Kansas which will convene at Kansas City.

     Dec 22 - The big elm standing on the southeast corner of the courthouse square has been chosen as the community Christmas tree. It will be decorated with lights and tinsel.

     Wm. Teat who is building the new school house at Bazaar has been compelled to lay off work lately due to cold weather.

     Dec 26 - Cora Harrison, of this city, and Tom Merritt, of South Fork were quietly married.

     Dec 29 - For the forth time within the past two years the general merchandise store of N. B. Scribner of Saffordville was broken into and robbed.

     The F. V. Alford Hardware Company has just sold a 8-16 Mogul tractor and a three gong plow outfit to Gregory Bros. This is the fourth tractor and plow or threshing machine outfits which the Alford Hardware Company has put out this season.

     A fine baby boy was born to Mr. & Mrs Henry Bastin, who live on the C. A. Cowley ranch at Matfield Green.

     Jan 2-1917 - Ed Minor who use to teach school when he lived in Chase Co. passed away at Horton. Mr. Minor was married to Belle Stone of Saffordville who survives.

     A large crowd from Thurman attended the masquerade ball at Matfield Green.

     Jan 5 - For the first time in the history of Chase County the blacksmiths and the horse-shoers are to put their business on a cash basis. This is due to a great advance in iron and materials.

     Mabel Sayre of Cedar creek and Stanley C. Brown are married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs T. E. Sayre.
