     1917 - 1918

     Dec 28, 1917 - The wedding of a popular and well know young couple of Rock creek was solemnized, that of Will Selves and Emily Becker. Rock creek will be their future home.

     Jan 1 1918 - John Stubbs Doolittle, father of J. H. Doolittle, President of the Strong City Bank and grandfather of Congressman, Dudley Doolittle, of the Fourth Congressional District of this state, died at the Axtell Hospital at Newton, following a long illness. The deceased was 81 years of age and has been a continuous resident since the year 1860, and engaged in the cattle business.

     Jan 4 - It seems certain that every Chase County boy who is at Camp Doniphan, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma will be given a furlough and allowed to come home before going to France.

     Jan 8 - A six day school week has been inaugurated at the Chase County High School. Voted by the parents, 119 families voted yes, 6 voted no, and 32 did not vote either way.

     Alfred Drummond and Hope Householder of the Elmdale vacinity were quietly married.

     Also married was Edward Sherffius and Ella Meierhoff, both of Diamond creek on New Year's Day.

     Jan 11 - Paul Cartter who is a Captain of the infantry has landed safely at a European port according to his wife who received a cablegram from her husband.

     Fourteen below zero in Chase County with snow cover.

     Sealed bids will be received at the office of County Clerk for County Farm Superintendent and for burial of the poor.

     Jan 14 - Henry Wehrenberg, a Bazaar farmer, plans the first irrigation system in Chase County. He will devote to truck growing. Water will be taken from a large pool on Sharp's creek.

     Jan 18 - Death and misfortune came to the home of Mrs Catherine Gleason, the county's first school teacher. Death came on Tuesday and then the house came near to burning down on Wednesday before help could arrive. She taught at Elmdale the fall term in 1862 in a small log cabin. Mrs Gleason lived in the home where she died near Bazaar, for fifty-two years.

     David Hilton, of this city has just completed thirty years of continual service as Santa Fe conductor.

     Jan 22 - Adeline Wilson of Peyton creek and E. G. Littler of this city are married on Peyton creek and Linnie Lowman of Coon creek and L. H. Parks of the Cedar Point neighborhood.

     W. W. Harvey of Strong City has a large force of men putting up ice. The ice has never been so clear and thick.

     Jan 25 - C. H. Burnett of Hymer has died. He first came to this county in the days of the "101 Ranch".

     Dr. A. E. Titus has purchased the L. M. Swope residence on Pearl Street.

     The Chase County High School now has eight typewriters in use.

     Ida Schimpff a former teacher in Chase County is married to Edwin Mason of Redland, California, which will be their home.
