     1918 - 1919

     Dec 11 1918 - W. F. Kieferle, of Marion moved his household goods and family from Marion last week. They have rented to Dick Hays property.

     Dec 13 - Sam Campbell has just purchased the Groundwater place in the northwest part of the city.

     Dec 18 - To dismiss local draft boards soon.

     Roy Jackson of Matfield Green returned to his home from Camp Cody, New Mexico.

     Dec 20 - Because of a very large number of influenza cases in this city, both schools were closed again.

     Dec 23 - Harley Crocker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa a half brother of A. T. and E. G. Crocker, of this county was found frozen to death in the Cox pasture south of Matfield Green, where he was checking on cattle.

     Removed restrictions on flour prices.

     Jan 1 1919 - Farm wages up with everything else, since pre-war days.

     Mr. Harry O'Riley has been honorably discharged from Uncle Sams Army.

     Jan 3 - G. W. Yeager of Bazaar died at his home on Rock creek. Mr. Yeager came to Chase county in 1864, living for a period of a little over 54 years on his home place. He was extensively engaged in farming and stock-raising.

     Ruby Fillmore, the 11 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs Will Fillmore who live on the Trayer place southeast of this city, died after a brief illness due to influenza.

     Jan 13 - Phil Simmons dies at his home in this city. He was in the prime of his life before the influenza took him. He was born on the Prairie Home Farm west of Strong City.

     The Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet and election of officers and the meal was served by the American Hotel.

     Jan 17 - Returning soldiers put an end to labor shortage.

     The people of Cedar Point are making plans for a new church.

     Jan 20 - The paving of Strong City's principal street, Cottonwood Avenue, now seems very certain in the near future.

     Frank Hoel has completed plans for the erection of a large garage building on the lots just north of John Mann's garage which he occupies at present.

     Jan 22 - A suit to break the will of Robert Brash, who was never married, is brought by his nephews and nieces who live both in this country and Scotland. (Later) The heirs cannot break the will.

     Jan 24 - There will be no Sunday hours at the city Santa Fe Depot or at Bazaar from now on.

     Plans are being made to re-organize the boys band. Alonzo Ward and Mr. Kieferle, of the Martin Dry Goods store, are the men who will be in charge.

     1-27- The old Commercial Hotel building on East Broadway, which has stood for fifty years burns down. No injures reported.
