     1923

     Aug 21 1923 - Hugh McLinden of Cedar Point passed away. Hugh was one of Chase County’s popular sons. He was only 38 years old. He married Cora Heckendorn in 1910, and had four children, Catherine, Twila, William, and James.

     Miss Isabel Stewart and Mr. Irving Myers were married at the Methodist parsonage at Emporia.

     Aug 28 - Bessie Childs is being replaced by Miss Grace Campbell as postmistress at Elmdale. Miss Childs was recently married.

     Rooms over the Exchange National Bank are being overhauled and rebuilt for Mr. Harry Wilcox who will open his dental office as soon as rooms are ready.

     Aug 28 - State Taxes higher, County lower, township and school taxes up and down.

     Sep 11 - Mr. & Mrs Si Fisher of the Clements area have a new baby girl.

     Mrs Susan Mercer died at the home of her son, J. B. Mercer of Wichita. Her husband David Mercer was one of the earlier settlers of Matfield Green.

     Sep 14 - The Trail Cafe in Cottonwood Falls has just been sold to W. L. Rockwell.

     A marriage license was issued at Emporia to Earl Victor Harlan of Matfield Green and Leona Steadman of Cottonwood Falls. Miss Steadman teaches at Lone Star this year.

     Sep 18 - Mr. & Mrs Lee Swope present the fair grounds to Cottonwood Falls.

     James Austin died at his home two miles east of Cottonwood Falls.

     Sep 21 - W. Roy Mushrush and Blanche Smith both of Cottonwood Falls are married at Emporia. They will honeymoon in Kansas City.

     Oct 2 - $1,000 in prizes for the horse races at the Chase County Fair held this year in Swope Park.

     Oct 5 - George W. Parks and Laura N. Sayre both of Cedar Point are married by Judge Allen.

     Oct 9 - John Crawford died at his home near Clements. He had lived in Chase Co. about sixty years. His wife was Addie L. Byram.

     Oct 16 - Mrs Roy Norton, formerly Mamie Arnold, died at Portland, Oregon. The body was brought to Chase County for burial.

     Oct 16 - It is beleived that the Klu Klux Klan in Strong City means to indulge in “crashing the gate” and hold its KKK meeting in the city auditorium.

     Mrs Delilah Romigh died at her home a mile west of Cottonwood Falls. She married W. S. Romigh in 1856 and raised a family of seven children.

     Oct 19 - James Yeager of Bazaar won 1st. place in stock judging; George Miller, of Middle Creek 2nd.; Wallace Evans of Cottonwood Falls 3rd.; and Edward Zimmerman 4th. All are students of the Chase County Community High School.

     Oct 23 - All peaceable at Klan meeting, which was moved to the baseball grounds.
