     Aug 7 1940 - Miss Helen Davis is the new Home Economics teacher at Chase County Community High School. She is filling the vacancy made by the resignation of Mrs Emma Gailbraith.


     Opal Little of Strong City is saved from drowning after stepping in a deep hole in the river. Bobby Cooper and Howard Granger saved her after they heard the cries.


     Aug 28 - Mrs A. M. Breese died at her home in this city. Mrs Breese’s maiden name was Hannah Wood.


     Sep 4 - Polio closes all public gatherings.


     Marriages: Miss Marian Cooper & Mr Paul Ayers; Miss Maxine Pendergraft & Robert L. Carrier; and Miss Elsie Adkins and Chle Richards.


     Sep 11 - Between 150 - 200 head of fat steers belonging to the Sauble Brothers, of Cedar Point stampede in Cedar Point as the herd was driven to the stockyards.


     Sep 18 - Glen Baumgardner buys the Thurston Lumber Co. at Elmdale.


     Sep 25 - County draft board appointed. They are: T. R. Wells & J. B. Smith of Elmdale, and John and Fred Murdock of Saffordville.


     Deaths: S. R. Campbell, Miss Janet McNee, and Monroe Pinkston.


     Oct 9 - The Cottonwood Falls National Guard may increase to 71 men. It now has 26 members.


     Miss Leola Childs & Mr. Paul Evans have been married in Kansas City, Mo.


     Skating rink at new armory building to start. Sponsors are the Claude Newlee post of the American Legion of this city.


     Oct 16 - The Cottonwood Falls National Guard have ten new recruits and they are Gene L. Baumgardner, Dean N. Heathman, Charles F. Hull, Melvin E. Lind, Virgil W. Pierce, John F. Conley, Don R. Heathman, Raymond L. Jordon, John R. McCabe and John L. Taylor.


     Oct 23 - Miss Joan Gurney and Mr Charles H. Austin are wed.


     Local National Guard Co. now has 50 members, 26 active and 24 inactive men.


     Carl Ballweg, of this city, will be advisor to the draft board.


     Oct 30 Ad - Charles D. Rettiger for County Commissioner on the Democratic ticket.


     Nov 6 - A heavy vote was cast in the county.


     Crushing stone began for the new school building to be erected at Strong City.


     Nov 13 - Mrs Laura Ella McKittrick of Wonsevu who has resided in this county for the past fifty—six years has passed away.


     Nov 20 - Local Guards to mobilized next month.


     The City Hall & Fire Station in Cottonwood Falls will no longer be a good loafing place.


     Nov 27 - Leo Guise of Strong City who was the Water Supt. was killed when a shell explodes in a fire at Cottonwood Falls.


     The Board classifies first 67 draftees.
