     1940 - 1941


     Dec 4 1940 - Deaths: T. 0. “Pat” Sauble of Cedar Point; Mrs A. M. Cress of Clements; & Mrs Goldie E. Rettiger.


     Feb 11 - The National Guard receives mobilization orders. The will leave for Camp Joseph T. Robinson, at Little Rock, Arkansas probably at the first of the year.


     Dec 11 - New Hope School District No. 39 began serving hot lunches.


     Dec 18 - The floors at the Municipal building in Cottonwood Falls have been cleaned & sealed.


     Chase County now has about 115 WPA workers on projects.


     Dec 25 - Funeral services for David Albert Matti who has been a farmer & cattleman in Chase County for the past sixty-two years are held.


     For the first time in 44 years, A. W. Ryan Strong City hotel man locks the front door for a one day rest.


     Influenza epidemic quite heavy in the county according to the County Health officer, Dr. A. E. Titus.


     Geo. McClellan, of Bazaar, is the only man in Chase County to have a son and a grandson in the same Army division, the Thirty-fifth: John I. McClellan, the son; and Howard McClellan, the grandson.


     Jan 1 1941 - A farewell banquet is given by the ladies of the Eastern Star to fifty-five National Guards.


     AD - For Sale Apples, Rettiger Bros. Strong City. Jan 8 - County fills first draft quota of one, Roy E. Nurnherg, of the southeast part of the county.


     The City’s new general fire chief is Emery Oldham.


     Miss Roberta Hudson of this city and Junior Heathman of Matfield Green are married in Manhattan, Ks.


     Jan 15 - Miss Margaret M. Vinson, 26, only daughter of Mr. & Mrs Tom Vinson, of this city died at the home of her parents after a long illness. She was a school teacher.


     Jan 22 - Lee Sampson & Clarence Morton, both of Strong City fill the number 2 & 3 on draft quota.


     Gerald Roberts of Strong City is the champion steer rider in the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, Colorado.


     Jan 29 - Reva Bandy & Max Shaw were wed.


     Feb 5 - Volume I of Chase County history now on sale and contains 448 pages. The price is $2.50.


     The Bruner mill at Cedar Point has been sold to Ray Crofoot.


     Feb 12 - Betty Lou Wiebrecht & Corporal Ernest Davis both of Strong City were married in December 1940.


     Feb 19 - The most excitement Matfield Green has had in a long time occurred when the Santa Fe depot was destroyed by fire.


     Feb 26 - C. A. Blackburn, of Bazaar is the new Probate Judge for Chase Co.


     Two pioneer women live to unusual age. Mrs Jane McCabe, 91, of Bazaar & Mrs Ruth Almond 105. Both passed away this week.
