     1942 - 1943


     Sep 30 1942 - Shortage of farm help a real problem.


     Oct 7 - High school boys helping busy farmers.


     Miss Jane Galbraith and Staff Sergeant James Bell, Jr. were married in Craig Field Chapel at Selma, Alabama.


     Oct 21 - New gas & tire rationing program.


     Three month old Ronald Harold Iliff, only son of Mr and Mrs Richard Iliff of Strong City died of double pneumonia.


     Nov 4 - Death of Mrs Chauncey Green of Elmdale and A. P. Brickell.


     Nov 18 - Coffee is next on the rationing program.


     Sgt. Eugene Judd is safe after falling in ocean after a crew of Airmen were forced down in the Atlantic. They were rescued by a Spanish trawler.


     Nov 25 - Gerald Roberts, of Strong City is way ahead as world champion cowboy.


     Dec 2 - The death of Harrison T. Pinkston one of this county’s oldest residents at his home at Bazaar.


     Also Alfred W. Dean, farmer of Elmdale has died.


     Dec 9 - 14 inch snow makes feeding livestock a real problem.


     Dec 16 - Gerald Roberts, son of Mr. & Mrs E. C. Roberts of Strong City is Worlds Champion Cowboy. He has 7,260 points. Gerald’s sister, Marjorie, has also made a place for herself in the rodeo world as one of the best girl riders and performers.


     “Open House” at Strong City’s new grade school building.


     Dec 23 - Miss Vera Underwood of Matfield Green became the bride of Mr. Donald Hursh, of Cassoday.


     Dec 30 - Clint Baldwin will he the new principal at the Strong City Grade School.


     Christmas mail sets a new record high, says postmaster, Cyrus Wadsworth.


     Jan 6 1943 - Mrs M. C. Newton who was 93, has passed away. Mrs Newton was married to a young civil war soldier on Fox Creek the day before Christmas, 1870.


     Complete registration of youths 18 to 20.


     Jan 13 - Robert R. Wells enlisted at Ft. Riley. He is in the ground crew of the Air Corp. stationed at St. Petersburg, Fl.


     Jan 13 - David McKee of Matield has passed away. He aided in organizing the Matfield Green Bank and served as President until his death.


     Jan 20 - Eighteen below zero, lowest in 12 years.


     Heart attack fatal to Wm. H. Woolwing at his home near Saffordville. His wife is the former Gertrude Stone.


     Jan 27 - The death of Prince Lafayette Hawkins, first child born near Clements, in Wise County, now Chase County in 1857. Lafayette is the son of John Wesley and Rebecca Ann Hawkins. He never married.


     Feb 3 - Flight Sergeant Woodrow Waddell, was killed in action.
