     Jan 7 1953 - Chase County has two New Year’s babies, Mr. & Mrs H. J. Johnson of rural Cottonwood Falls, a son, Hugh Jay; and Mr. & Mrs John Bock, of Elmdale, a girl, Elsie Gaylene; Mr. & Mrs Ernest Davis of Strong City also have a new daughter, Vicki Lynn, born on Jan. 2nd.


     Fred H. “Sonny” Howard receives his appointment as patrolman.


     TB Christmas Seal Drive nets over $968 to date.


     Jan 14 - The Derby Station in Strong City has changed hands, Howard “Dutch” Brown has sold it to Russell “Dee” Fink.


     Jan 21- Miss Minnie Norton retires from public work after many years.


     Henry C. Hudson retires from Courthouse after 31 and one-half years of being the custodian.


     Jan 28 - A. J. “Tut” McCabe is honored for his distinguished service in Soil Conservation.


     Henry Giese sold his shop on the east side of Broadway in Cottonwood Falls to Dr. Jeanne Carley. She plans to use the building for a garage.


     Feb 4 - Mrs Lillie Judd and Mrs Harriet Weaver have passed away.


     Jim Bell, Jr. will fill the unexpired term of Mayor of Cottonwood Falls due to the resignation of Gilbert Mott.


     Mr. & Mrs P. F. Schimpff celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary. They were married in Cottonwood Falls Jan. 30, 1894.


     Feb 11 - Mrs Dan W. Eastman of Matfield Green named as master homemaker.


     Mr. & Mrs Frank Cox of Matfield Green observe their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs Cox’s maiden name was Watchous.


     Marie Studer of Cottonwood Falls and David L. Williams of Emporia are wed.


     Feb 18 - Jim McGraw becomes an eagle scout.


     Feb 25 - Joseph Galentine, PR 2-C of the U. S. Navy, son of Mrs Edward Maddox was killed in a car accident in Coco, Fl.


     Mr. & Mrs David Mercer of Homestead are the parents of a daughter. This is the first baby for Homestead Township in 1953.


     Mar 3 - The Cottonwood Grade wins basketball tournament.


     Mar 11 - Strong City High is winner of the district basketball tournament. Everett Bullock, and Max Gordon were the high scorers in the game with Elmdale.


     Arthur T. Crocker passes away.


     Walter Ludwig takes his own life at his home.


     An accident which might have been serious when Marion Lee Fillmore 10 years old went head-first through the windshield of the taxi of C. H. Beach.


     Ray Rice, Strong City veteran Santa Fe employee, retires after 35 years of service.
