     1960


     Jan 20 1960 - Highway crash takes three lives of Matfield Green family. Mrs Donloe B. Lewis, and her children, Molly, 7 months, and Marty, 5 years.


     Oscar Messer succumbs. He farmed 45 years in the Wonsevu vicinity before moving to Buck creek in 1944.


     A son is born to Mr. & Mrs Warren Cahoone, rural Strong City, named Mark Allan.


     Feb 3 - Burns fatal to Elmdale pioneer woman, Miss Carrie Wood, 91.


     Feb 10 - New booths installed at Billing pharmacy.


     Feb 17 - Complete staking site for sewage disposal plant at Cottonwood Falls.

     The work order has been issued to Passmore & Sons.


     Will discontinue Sunday funerals.


     Alfred “Shorty” Deering 38, takes his own life.


     Feb 24 - A severe snow storm, the second in four days.


     Complete improvements at the Gibb Grocery & Market in Cottonwood Falls.


     Classy Matfield Green five wins the grade school tourney.


     Mar 2 - Third heavy snowfall during the last ten days blankets area.


     Mar 9 - Birth Sp/5 and Mrs Joe E. Evans of Paris, France are the parents of a daughter, Debra Kay.


     Ernest K. Davis is the Chase County Weed Supervisor.


     Mar 16 - Mrs Roberta Heathman will seek nomination for Register of Deeds on the Republican ticket.


     Veteran county official Mrs Mildred Speer resigns and is replaced by Mrs Wm. Austin.


     Mar 23 - Lloyd Smith, after 12 years, resigns at the Strong City High. Norman May is new Principal for the Cottonwood Falls Grade School.


     Break ground for new Baptist church in ceremonies at building site in Cottonwood Falls.


     Mar 30 - Big centennial celebration at Bazaar will commemorate the 100 years of the founding of the towns post office.


     Apr 6 - Work is nearly complete on the Roniger museum.


     Francis Bray is named VFW post commander.


     Apr 13 - Mrs Jack Trayer, 85, of Cottonwood Falls is taken in death.


     Apr 20 - Mrs Albert Burton is named YWCA President.


     Apr 27 - Inspecting and cleaning the Cottonwood Falls city water tower has begun.


     Population in slight decline.


     High school juniors elected to attend Boys State are: David Croy, Bill McGraw, and Ken Clark.


     May 11 - Revision in passenger and mail services have been necessary due to discontinuance of Santa Fe Passenger Trains. No. 5 & 6.
