     1996 - 1997


     Oct 17 1996 - Chase County Middle School football team League champions for the third year in a row, with Tom Grokett still at the helm.


     The Exchange National Bank’s automatic teller machine began operation.


     Without doubt one of the most important improvements made at Chase County Elementary School is the new playground equipment which has been installed.


     Oct 24 - The exterior of the Roniger Museum will get a fresh coat of paint.


     Oct 31 - A most significant snow of 6 inches in Chase County - Early snow of the last 13 years.


     Nov 7 - Gerald Ingalls wins sheriff’s race.


     Glendon & Eula Barrett, rural Cottonwood Falls were awarded the honor of Chase County Farm Bureau Farm Family of the year.


     Nov 21- Permits for Cottonwood Falls dam project obtained.


     Ground breaking ceremony for the new Chase County All Veterans Memorial was held. The Chase County High band played at the ceremonies.


     Doug Jackson of Doug’s Flower & Gifts, Strong City will celebrate 25 years in the business with an open house.


     Donations of 318 cans of food was the result of the Powder Puff football game put on by Chase County High students.


     Deaths: Phill Pinkston, Ida M. (Way) Vinson, Rodney T. Symes & Terry E. (Wagoner) Kanon.


     Nov 28 - Chase County 4-H photographers were given some tips on what makes a good photo and how to do it by local Roger Weaver.


     Dec 5 - The approximate cost for work on Bates Park is set at $69,000 for the finished project.


     The three and one half inches of snow adversely affected the annual Chase County Christmas celebration.


     Amy Fink, daughter of Mr. & Mrs Jim Fink of rural Cottonwood Falls was crowned Miss Merry Christmas Chase County.


     Dec 12 - Dave’ s Longhorn is to be operated alcohol and smoke free according to Dave Swift.


     Robert & Hattie Laughridge will celebrate 50 years of marriage.


     Jan 2 1997 - Deaths: Juanita Faye Miser, who lived her entire life in Chase County; The daughter of Harvey & Ethel (Myers) Osborn. Also Eileen Marie Garrison of this city passed away.


     Jan 9 - Sheriff David Reed resigns with only 11 days remaining on his four year term of office.


     Elexia Yoakem Goff medical fund is opened at the Exchange National Bank. Elexia was diagnosed with limphoma of the brain last August.


     Joyce Ann Blount was duly appointed, qualified and acting Co-Executrix of Estates of Nina Belle Burton & Albert J. Burton, both deceased.


     Jan 16 - Judge Francis Towle swore in Chase County. Clerk Sharon Cahoone, Sheriff Gerald Ingalls, Register of Deeds, Bert Glanville, and County Commissioners, Paul Jones and Edgar Griffin.


     A reception was held at the Chase County courthouse for Judges Francis Towle and William Dick.
