     Jan 23 1997 - Jay Whitney has been appointed as Undersheriff and Charlie Swift as head deputy to the Chase County Board of County Commissioners.

     Bessie McClellan marks 100 years. She was born in a blizzard in 1897 on the family’s farm three miles northwest of Saffordville to Luther & Susan Stanbrough. In 1919 she married John McClellan. John & Bessie had two children, Howard & Barbara.

     John & Kelly Rettiger of Prairie Village have a new son, Norris Alan.

     Feb 20 - Cottonwood Falls Attorney Lee Fowler was appointed to the recently vacated Fifth District position.

     Thieves take 28 roping corral panels from a Fox Creek pasture owned by the Bill Hatcher family.

     The Chase County High School basketball team was ranked number one in 2A basketball for the third week in a row. Their record so far is 15-0.

     Feb 27 - The Chase County Board of Commissioners accepted the resignation of Chairman Paul Jones.

     John Conklin, a Cottonwood Falls resident was selected at the new district magistrate judge for Chase and Lyon counties.

     One more time, Chase County woke up to about 3 inches of wet snow.

     Daniel Mushrush was the winner overall at the Chase County Middle School spelling bee. Daniel is a 6th grader.

     Mar 6 - The Chase County Historical Society is getting a new coat of interior paint, with work being done by local Gary Cutsinger. Work on the outside of the building has already been completed, done by locals, John Haglund and Jerry Linsea. Open house will be held later.

     Harder’s Market announced in the Leader-New that their Cottonwood Falls grocery store is for sale.

     The Chase County Chamber of Commerce elected its 1997 officers and they are: Nancy Griffith,secretary; Tom Bell, treasurer; Berry Linnens president, and Barbara Zurhellen, vice-president.

     Millie Pinkston has retired and closed her beauty shop in downtown Cottonwood Falls.

     Mar 6 - USD-284’s enrollment is down and the district will lose $85,189 in general fund budget authority this year.

     Mar 13 - The Senior Center in Cottonwood Falls got a new bus.

     Fred & Ola Pracht who have lived on the same farm all their married life will celebrate their 60th anniversary with a family dinner.

     Mar 20 - The Cottonwood Falls water tower will be cleaned and painted.

     J. Richard “Dick" Iliff, publisher and editor of the Chase County Leader-News for 30 years has passed away at the age of 83. Surviving is one son, Jim Iliff and one grandson.

     Mar 27 - The Social Study Club to disband after nearly a century. It had its beginnings at the Fairview School House, District #53. Named is a few of the early & latter day members: Anna Becker, Etta Becker, Margaret Schwilling, Emily Selves, Mrs Lee McCabe and Marie McCabe.

     Apr 3 - Matfield Green Hitchin Post under new management. Mike & Jayne Mayes have purchased the business.

     Apr 10 - Matfield Green’s dump is closed by order of KDHE.
