Anna E. Arnold was born December 22, 1879. She spent a large part of her life around Chase County.
She was graduated from State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas in 1900. She received a B.S. degree from Columbia University in 1917, a diploma in school administration in 1917 and a M.A. degree in 1924 from the same institution. After her first year of teaching, which was in a rural school in Chase County, she was an instructor in the Cottonwood Falls schools for five years.
She was County Superintendent of Schools of Chase County from 1907 to 1915. In addition to her official duties, Miss Arnold wrote two text books. Her "Civics and Citizenship" in 1912 was adopted as the state textbook on civil government for use in the public schools of Kansas. It was used by a large number of womens' clubs. Her second textbook "A History of Kansas" was the first book printed under the State Publication Law and was also adopted by the textbook commission.
Miss Arnold was considered one of the foremost educational leaders of the state of Kansas.She went to Portland, Oregon as principal of Girls Polytechnic in 1917 when the school had an enrollment of fewer than 200 students. The school had grown to an average of 800 under her leadership at her death, April 15, 1942.
Miss Arnold was a member of the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, Professional Women's League, Portland Art Association and National Education Association. She was president of the Portland Principals' Association in 1928 and 1937.
Her closest surviving relative is a Nephew, Charles Arnold, ldoswell, New Mexico. She also has a great niece and three great nephews living in Kansas. Mrs. Chloe Ann Triggs, Florence and Danny Trayer, Garden City. Harold Trayer and Charles Trayer both reside in Cottonwood Falls.
