FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
of
COTTONWOOD FALLS, KANSAS ,1886 to 1972
On Sunday, August 29, 1886, the Reverend
J.F. Hendy, DD., President of the College of Emporia, met with a large congregation who desired to
organize a Presbyterian Church.
A Committee, appointed by Presbytery, met
with the congregation on October 17, 1886, and the
organization of the church was perfected.
A sum sufficient to build and furnish a church
building 36' x 60' was secured, as well as a sum
sufficient to secure a capable minister.
The plans and specifications for the church
were made by a Philadelphia architect. The site,
purchased from J.E. Harper-, was 3 lots on the
northwest corner of Block 30, Cottonwood Falls,
and has remained the site to the present day.
Dedication of the original church was held
July 3, 1887. Dr. R.S. Dudley accepted the first
call to the pastorate.
In 1922 a basement was added to the Church.
Extensive remodeling, which included the changing
of the steeple from spire to belfry style, was made
during the period of 1922-1933.
The urgent need for more room prompted a
movement to build a new and larger church. On
October 15, 1956, the disposition of the original
church was made. The service for the Laying of
The Cornerstone was held on May 5, 1957, with the
dedication of the new Church, constructed of brick
and stone, taking place on November 3, 1957.
The Reverend Thomas E. Robson, present
pastor, has filled the pulpit since December 5, 1965.
