FLINT HILLS AIRPORT by Mrs. Bus Yoakem
Dr. and Mrs. A.E. Titus donated 54 acres to
the city of Cottonwood Falls in August, 1948 for
use as a city airport. The tract of land in the NE
1/4 of Sec. 32, Township 19- Range 8.
The formal opening of the Chase County Airport was celebrated Sunday July 10, 1949, by a
varied and interesting air show. Events consisted
of a fried chicken dinner cooked and served at noon
by the Legion Auxillary, a dedication address,
stunt flyer and girl parachute jumper; spot landing
contests and bombing contests. The spot landing
event was won by Larry Spencer, Cottonwood
Falls.
The run way is a half mile long running north
and south. There is storage for 6 airplanes and the
last improvements made were landing lights. The
airport is listed on all aeronautical charts of the
Federal Aviation Agency.
The airport was named "Flint Hills Airport"
in 1949 and at that time the officers were: President-Larry Spencer, Vice Pres. John Sharp, Sec.
and treas. Girdner Crofoot, Directors- Temple
Atkins, Bill Pretzer and Elmore Stout.
