The founders of the Norton family of Norton
Creek were William Norton and Elizabeth Caughlin,
who were born in Ireland. They were married in
Ireland and came to America sometime about 1833
and 1834.
THE NORTON RANCH
During the journey west, William Norton died
leaving Elizabeth with five small sons. They were:
Micheal, William, Thomas, John and Patrick. Elizabeth moved on westward with her sons where
they settled on 160 acres which lay at the junction
of a small stream and South Fork of the Cottonwood
River and on the east side of the latter. This land
was granted by Abraham Lincoln on January 10,
1863, under a bounty land act.
William, Micheal, Thomas and John all served
in the Army during the Civil War. Later in 1878,
William Norton purchased another 160 acres under
a Homestead Act. This was granted on August 6,
1878 by Rutherford B. Hayes.
William Norton was the only son to marry. He
married Victoria Jeffery and they raised five sons,
W.F. Norton, E.P. Norton, R.E. Norton, J.R. Norton and Thomas H. Norton and two daughters, Minnie Norton, all of whom are deceased, and Grace
Beedle, of Bazaar, Kansas.
William and Elizabeth built a fine home on the
Norton Ranch in 1873. Later in 1914 it was remodeled and added to, as it stands today.
