SHARPS CREEK CEMETERY
The plot of ground used as a family cemetery
for the Sharp family and later given to the public
as a cemetery is located about one half mile east
of what is known as the Nate Russell farm on
Sharps Creek.
It is in a native bluestem pasture on
a level above farmground on a creek and is accessible only by going through the Martin Eckhardt
home yard. The cemetery is well fenced and is
maintained by the township board. There are 25 or
30 native rocks believed to mark graves.
The most
recent burial was that of Wm. Peyton who died in
Oklahoma. The earliest marked grave is that of
John Sharp, 1810-1861. Other markers indicate:
Elvie Jane, daughter of G.E. and N.A. Sharp 1873-
1874; Simon Davis 1831-1889; Martha Bowls wife of
C.C. Davis 1849-1885; Ray Peyton son of P.P. and
L.A, Peyton 1884-1906; Nancy Sharp, 1815-1885;
Maranda J. Sharp 1848-1866; and Nancy Sager, no
date. It is believed several members of the Peyton
family are buried on the plot marked only by the
name Ray Peyton. The Peyton family lived on
South Fork above the Roniger farm.
The first home was a dugout but later a frame
house was built. Three members of the Sager family
are buried here including the mother, sister and
brother of George, John, Martin and Marjorie Sager
who now live in Cottonwood Falls. The mother,
Nancy was buried in 1939. The Peytons and Sharps
were related to the Sagers. The Peyton family having homesteaded on Peyton Creek in 1859.
