Ferdinard Smith
FERDINAND SMITH FAMILY

Ferdinand Smith was born in Hastings, Ontario, Canada, April 25 1940. He lived the early part of his life in Ontario. On February 18 1860 he was married to Mary Ann Marriott at Hastings.
Mary Ann Marriott was born in Northampshire, England, July 02 1842. and came to Canada with her parents when she was fifteen years of age.
After their marriage Mr and Mrs Ferdinand Smith lived at Hastings, Ontario, where a son, Charles, was born in December, 1860; a daughter, Carrie, was born in 1861; a son, Wellington, in 1862, and a son John, was born Feb 21 1863. In 1865 Carried died at the age of four years.
The Smiths came from Canada to Osage City, Kansas, in 1870, where they settled and lived for six years. A daughter, Frances Edna, was born at Osage City, April 3 1870. Another daughter Grace May, also was born there Feb 27 1875. Charles died that same year at the age of fifteen.
In 1876 the Smiths moved to Chase county, settling first at Saffordville but later in the year moving to Strong City. Wellington died of diphtheria at Strong City in the fall of 1877 at the age of Fifteen. Maud Irene was born Jul 14 1882 at Strong City.
Ferdinand Smith died February 23, 1920 at the age of 80 years. Mrs Mary Ann Smith died at the home of her daughter Grace in Brunswick, Missouri, July 01 1927. Had she lived one more day, she would have been 85 years of age.
John Smith died in May 1931, at his home in Kansas City, Kansas, at the age of 68 years.
Those living in 1940 are: Frances Smith (Mrs Wm Poindexter) Houston Texas; Grace Smith (Mrs Charles Robinson), Brunswick, Mo; Maude Smith (Mrs James Ryan) Emporia, Lyon, Kansas.
(A little about E H Beck.} E H Beck was the first settler on the W1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Sec 36-T19-R7E Ed Beck came to Kansas from Indiana in 1880. He stopped at Burns, where he built small houses and sold them at a profit. He came to Chase County in 1881. Here he farmed and raised livestock.
E H Beck married Della Sharp in 1885. Mrs Beck taught school for several years. They were quite prosperous and in a few years their 80 acre farm had grown to 320 acres. They also had some property in Elmdale and Cottonwood Falls, besides owning a hotel (now the American). Mr and Mrs Beck were divorced.
In 1909 Mr Beck married Mrs Frances Marriott. Mrs Della Beck died in 1927. Ed Beck died in 1929. Mrs Frances Marriott Beck still lives in Cottonwood Falls. (1939) Ed Beck and Frances had two children. Charles and Virginia.
