Chase County Sketches

Towle, Francis -
In the heart of the Flint Hills, and blue stem
pasture country in Kansas, rests the historical
Chase County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse
still in use in the state. In this century old land
mark is the office headquarters, as well as the home
of Francis Towle, Sheriff of Chase County. He lives
in the sheriff's quarters in the back of the building,
with his wife Lela and two teenage daughters,
Frances Lynn and Dorothy Mae.
Francis has very ably and devotedly served his
country as chief law man, being on duty day and
night for 14 years, with very little time off for vacations.
He takes a deep personal interest in all the
people he comes in contact with, and is always
willing to help those who are in need. Francis tries
hard to be understanding and fair, and although he
seems to be always smiling, and is quite a practical
joker, he can be and has been very firm and persuasive when the need arises, as many a lawbreaker
can attest to.
He is well-liked by most of the younger generation of the county, and works hard at understanding
their problems. He is very interested in learning
better and more modern law enforcement methods,
and is ready to cooperate with his fellow law enforcement officials at all times. He has been called
the modern Matt Dillon of Kansas in an article published in a state-wide newspaper. Those who know
him think this is not far from right.
