Allen Anna Elizabeth Eager

MRS E. P. ALLEN, DIES SUDDENLY
Mrs. E. P. Allen, wife of Former County Commissioner E P. Allen, of this county, died at her home at Elmdale Saturday morning death being due to heart trouble. The family are pioneers of this county and are widely known. Besides her husband Mrs. Allen leaves one sister, May Eager, who lived with her and her husband in Elmdale. The funeral services was held at the family home in Elmdale at 10 o'clock Monday afternooon January 20th, after which interment was, made in the Elmdale cemetery. Mrs. Allen's, death came very suddenly and unexpected. She retired Thursday night, feeling as well as usual. About 4:30 o'clock in the morning she was dead.

Because of the death of Mrs. E. P. Allen Elmdale mourns one Of her greatest losses years, Anna Elizabeth Eager was born in Orange, county New York, August 16, 1862. She was 56 years 5 months and 2 days of age, her death being January 18, 1919 Anna was the eldest of four children of Mr and Mrs. Charles A Eager, who moved to Michigan when she was a small girl. In the year 1878 Eager came to Kansas and purchased a farm three miles southwest of Elmdale. After returning to Michigan for the family he was taken sick and died.

The family came west and tried to make a home on the farm, but poor health and the shock of her husband's death was too 'much for the mother who gradually failed mentally until she was helpless. Her frail body however only surrendered to death in April 1917. Through the kindness of friends and their own efforts the children secured their education and Robert was studying for a physician, when he died at the age of twenty-two. Orson C. Eager continued to work the farm until the girls were able to do for themselves, when he went out and made a home for himself. His death occurred just ten weeks before His sister, the deceased. He died at his home in Kansas City, Kansas, leaving a wife Mrs. Frances Eager and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Richardson of San Diego, Calif.

Miss Anna Eager was married November 6, 1901 to Mr. E. P. Allen of Elmdale, where she has lived since. When she married Mr. Allen she became the mother of his three little girls, a mother indeed she proved to be. She has brought them to womanhood with the same care as though they had been her own by birth. Mrs. Allen has been a devout Christian since 1879, and a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The poor and the sick always drew her to their needs. The church will feel the loss of her constant labor. She was secretary of the Official Board, also filling the office in the, Ladies Aid Society and the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. Her ability as record keeper was unsurpassed. Her broad work in the church never caused neglect in her own home where she was recognized as a model wife. Of late years Mrs. Allen took great pleasure in conducting the Cradle Roll of the Sunday school which is the largest in Chase county. Through her energy, perhaps more than any other, the beautiful new church building now just finished was made possible. Her strength like her master's was spent for others. Had she cared for herself more and less for others, she might have been still among her loved ones. God only knows. At least, "She hath done what she could." And the memory of her unselfish devotion to humanity will long be an inspiration to those who have known her.

The truest sympathy of friends is extended to Mr. Allen and his family and Miss Mary E. Eager, the only surviving member of the Eager family, to whom she had been not only a sister, but also a mother. The funeral service was held at the Allen home Monday and the body laid to rest in the family lot in the Cottonwood Falls Cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS We want to thank the friends for the great kindness shown in our recent sorrow. We truly appreciate the help of each, without which we feel we could not have borne our grief. Your sympathy expressed in the flowers was so helpful. To those who rendered the comforting music and all who helped in other ways we shall always remember you with gratitude. E. P. Allen and daughters, Miss May E. Eager, Mrs. C. C. Eager.
