Crocker, Edward G EDWARD G. CROCKER
E.G. CROCKER PASSES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS
Edward Grey Crocker, lifelong resident of Matfield Green, died at St. Mary’s hospital in Emporia, Tuesday evening, May 16th, after an extended illness.
He was born March 27, 1872, and had spent his entire life on the famous Crocker ranch, near Matfield Green, that his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Crocker, had taken in 1866 on a relinquishment. The father died in 1876, leaving the two young sons, Edward and Arthur.
Subsequently Mrs. Crocker married William F. Dunlap, of Princeton, Ill., who ran the Crocker farm and engaged in the cattle business until the Crocker brothers were old enough to take over the management.
For many years the Crocker Brothers were breeders of prize winning purebred Herefords and handled grass cattle by the thousands.
E.G. Crocker was elected and served two terms in the Kansas legislature from this county, starting in 1904.
He married Miss Maude Brandley, eldest daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. Henry Brandley of Matfield Green and to this union two sons and two daughters were born: Arthur Crocker of Vancouver; H. Mason Crocker, of the Crocker ranch and Brady, Texas; Ruby Gallagher of Harrisburg, Penn., and Anna Marie Howard, of Strong City. His brother A.T. Crocker of the ranch and eight grandchildren also survive him. Mrs. Crocker passed away December 14, 1936.
With the passing of E.G. Crocker goes one of the foremost cattlemen of this county. One of the last big stock deals he handled was the driving of eight hundred head of cattle from Fairfax, Oklahoma, to his home pastures in Chase county. One of the men in charge of the drive was the young son, Mason, who with nine other men made the drive, following the outline of the Osage Hills into the Flint Hills. The drive proved that cattle could be driven under their own power, with little shrinkage.
Funeral services will be held at the McKenzie Funeral Home in this city Friday afternoon at 2:30. He will be laid to rest by the side afternoon at 2:30. He will be laid to rest by the side of his wife in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
