DEATH OF JOHN H. MAKEMSON
John H. Makemson, a resident of
this county for the past fifty-five
years and a former county commissioner died that home
his home on Jacob's creek
creek in the east part of the county Sunday, July 27th. Mr. Makemson had been in failing health for several months. He was in his 85th, year.
The funeral services were held from the Grandview Church at 10:00 o'clock Wednesday morning, Rev. E. B. Hall, a Methodist pastor of Baldwin, preaching the sermon. Interment was in the Grandview cemetery.
John Makemson was for more than half a century. a farmer and live-stock raiser of the eastern part of Chase county. He was a man well thought of by all and he was a good neighbor and a fine citizen. His death will be keenly felt by all.
Born in Logan county, Ohio, January 4th, 1843, Mr. Makemson grew to his young manhood in his native state and Indiana. He was eighteen years of age when the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the 69th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. When he had completed this enlistment he reenlisted in the 118th Indiana Volunteer Infantry where he served his country to the conclusion of that war.
In 1876, Mr. Makemson came to Lyon county and the same year located on Jacobs Creek in the eastern part of this county and this had continued to be his home until his death.
On January 9th, 1868 Mr. Mackenson was married to Miss Martha E. Christ and to this union three children were born, who are Ernest Makemson, and Harry Makemson, both of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Mrs. H. E. Peach, of Emporia. Mrs. Makemson's death occurred in 1890. On April 26th, 1893, three years later, Mr. Mackenson was married to Jeanette Murray, of Plymouth, who survives.
Nearly all of his life Mr. Makemson was an active worker in the church. He was a charter member of the Grandview Methodist church and before coming to Chase county had been a member of the Lutheran Church which he joined in his childhood in Ohio. He was a member of the C. C. Myser Post of the G. A. R. of Toledo, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Indiana. He served as county commissioner from the First District of this county for four years from 1908 to 1907.
