Leland Starkey

Leland Starkey, 89, of Harrison, Ark,, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the Hillcrest Home in Harrison, Ark.

He was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Chase County, Kansas, the son of Jesse and Ethel Webster Starkey. He had been a resident of Harrison for 64 years.

Mr. Starkey was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II and received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Mason's, Eastern Star; the Grange; the North Arkansas Writers Guild; and the Boone County Historical and Railroad Society.

He is survived by a son, Leland Q.; two daughters, Linda Norton and Nelda Coffman; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred Lou Starkey; a brother, Jesse L. Starkey; a sister, Nelda Rembe; and a granddaughter, Rachael Starkey.

Services were April 13, 2004, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Harrison, Ark., with the Rev. JoAnn Barker officiating. Interment was in White Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund.
