Vinson, Thomas G.
Mr. Thomas G. Vinson, who has been in poor health for several months and who has been confined to his home at intervals during that time passed away early Thursday morning.
Mr. Vinson has never been a robust man but was rather of the wiry type of the frontiersman. He is one more of the old soldiers to answer the final call.
Thomas G. Vinson was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, March 7th, 1845. He was only a boy when the Civil War broke out but he enlisted in Company F, 6th. Iowa Volunteers and served to the close of the war.
In 1867 Mr. Vinson was married to Julia A. Cheney and to this union two children were born, both of whom died in infancy. His wife died February, 1872.
Mr. Vinson was marred again in 1873 to Miss Margaret Barr. To this union seven children were born, five of whom survive him. They are: Mr. Julia Boatwright of Colorado; George H. Vinson of this city; William H. Vinson of Oregon; Samuel I. Vinson of Clements, and Thomas P. Vinson of Matfield Green. Denton T. Vinson died when a small child in Iowa and Mary Edith Vinson died at Sunnyside, Kansas, in September 1915. Mr. Vinson’s second wife died May 6th, 1907.
After the death of the second Mrs. Vinson, he lived with his different children until May, 1921, when he married Miss Belle Hite, an old friend of his boyhood, who also survives him.
Mr. Vinson and his family came from Iowa to Kansas in the late nineties and bought a farm in the Homestead neighborhood, where he lived for several years. He later moved to Cottonwood Falls where he has made his home most of the time since. He went from here to Sunnyside, Kansas, and lived there for a number of years, but later returned here.
Mr. Vinson was a good business man and accumulated a reasonable fortune. He was a good trader and, like most traders, he enjoyed the trading art. He took lively interest in most public matters and was seldom neutral on any matter. His beliefs were strong and he was ever ready to defend them. Mr. Vinson was one of the young-old men. His mind was alert and he mixed much with young men. He made it his business to keep well posted on public matters and he usually held his end up in any discussion.
While the editor did not always agree with Mr. Vinson, we always enjoyed visiting with him. He was a hard fighter but a graceful loser-when he did lose. And he was one of those rare men who could enjoy a joke on himself.
The funeral of Mr. Vinson will be held from the Methodist church, Saturday afternoon at two o’clock and will be in charge of Rev. Porter. The pall bearers will be World War soldiers, internment will be at the Strong city cemetery.
