Vondeveld, Della
A series of tragedies which followed each other in quick succession has caused the death of Mrs. Della Vondeveld who was the daughter of the late J. H. Murdock, former sheriff of this county, and wife of E. C. Vondeveld, a railroad man of Emporia. Several months ago, Mrs. Vondeveld’s husband was injured in a railroad wreck, being caught between the engine and tender of his train when the engine left the track and turned over. He was held fast under the wreckage and painfully scalded by escaping steam and his release was effected only when trainmen were compelled to cut his arm off in order to release and save him from being scalded to death.
A short time after this tragedy which was a great nervous shock to Mrs. Vondeveld, came the accidental death of her father, J. H. Murdock, who was killed in Emporia, suddenly when struck by a motor car. A few days later came the news of the sudden death of a niece of Mrs. Vondeveld and then came a message from California where Mr. Vondeveld’s mother lived, stating that she was lying at the point of death.
In response to this message, Mr. Vondeveld who was barely sufficiently recovered from his injuries to travel, decided to go to California and while he and his wife were on the way to the depot to take a train they witnessed a railroad accident in which a man was instantly killed by a railroad engine as he was attempting to cross the track.
The nervous shock and worry from all these misfortunes proved too much for Mrs. Vondeveld and she was taken to her home the same afternoon in a serious condition, her husband postponing his trip to remain with her. Her death resulted a few weeks later in the Newman Memorial hospital in Emporia, where she was later taken. Her physicians said that death was due to the nervous shocks and worry over the many tragedies that had come to her family.
Mrs. Vondeveld’s death occurred last Saturday, April 5th, and the funeral services were held the following Monday, at the family home at 514 Rural Street, Emporia, after which interment was made in the Toledo cemetery.
Mrs. Vondeveld’s maiden name was Della Murdock. She was born and raised in the east part of this county and lived here with her parents during the time her father was sheriff of Chase County. She is survived besides her husband, by four brothers and sisters, who are Fred and Al Murdock, of this county; Wm. Murdock, of Waco, Mo., and Mrs. Rosie Bond, of Burlingame, Kansas.
