Another Veteran Gone.

Henry C. Powers, who has been lying sick with consumption for a number of months was buried at Mt. Hope cemetery on Friday last. The funeral was under the auspices of the G. A. R., assisted by the Sons of Veterans and Woman’s Relief Corps, Rev. C. R. Rice conducting the religious services. Comrade Powers was one of our oldest residents having located in Independence township in 1869. He entered the military service in the 89th Indiana Volunteers when a boy of fifteen. We have heard him state that he was in sixteen battles and that of the twelve boys who enlisted with him but two of them returned home. He gave the best years of his life to his country and at the early age of forty has died from the effects of the exposures and hardships of soldier life. He leaves a widow and six children who have the sympathy of the community in their affliction. He was a charter member of McPherson Post and an earnest friend of the soldier. He declined to make applications for a pension until within the last year and his claim was not yet allowed.
