a Pioneer in Chanute—Funeral

Largely Attended.

   Hiram VanOrman died at his home 927 South Lincoln avenue, at 6:30 Saturday evening of complication of diseases.  He had been a semi-invalid for many years but his last sickness was of about two weeks duration.

  Mr. VanOrman is 68 years of age.  He was born in Granger township, Indiana, December 7, 1838.  In 1845 he removed with his parents to Illinois where he resided until 1868 when he came to Kansas.  He was a soldier in the Civil war, serving in Co. E, 83rd Illinois Volunteers enlisting August 7th, 1862, and being discharged because of disability after serving a little less than two years.

  He was married to Ellen Allen in Centerville, Ind., July 15, 1864, and his widow and two children survive him.  A son, R. O. VavOrman resides in Chanute and a daughter, Mrs. Frank Barney, lives at Longton.

  He was a fine old gentleman and probably numbered as many acquaintances as any other man in the city.  Everyone liked and respected him.

  The funeral services were held at the Methodist church this morning conducted by Rev. H. J. Coker.  A large concourse of friends attended.
