The funeral of Isaac Ziegler was held at the home just southwest of Burlington Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Dr. E. C. Dunn of the Methodist church and was largely attended. Dr. Dunn paid a high tribute to Mr. Ziegler. Music was furnished by Messers. F. R. Hammond, John Redmond, W. M. Scott and E. M. Young, accompanied by Miss Joyce Wentz. An unusual number of beautiful flowers attested Mr. Ziegler’s standing in the community.
Isaac Ziegler was born at New Castle, Penn. October 19, 1842, and died at his home just west of Burlington, Kan., December 28, 1922, aged 80 years, 3 months and 18 days. His early life was spent in Pennsylvania. His parents died when he was very young, leaving him to make his way in the world.
On July 19th, 1861 Mr. Ziegler enlisted in Company H, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves, serving his country during the war being mustered out as a 1st sergeant.
Immediately after the war he came west to Illinois, where he lived for two years, then came to the state of Kansas, settling near Burlington where he joined the United Brethren church, and has been a member ever since.
It was after coming west to the state of Kansas that he met Miss Mary Ann Palmer, whom he chose for his life companion, and who survives him. They lived on the homestead seven years, then moving to a new home near Virgil, Kan., where he and his companion lived for thirty two years. After which they came back to the scene of their early days when they met and loved each other, where they lived until he went in peace to his Master.
Thirteen children were born to this union and all except two remain to mourn the loss of a loving father, Emma dying at the age of eleven, and Mrs. Millie Roche at the age of thirty six. Those surviving are Clifford W. of Madison, Kan., Edward W. of Loveland, Calif., Dave A. of Burlington, George E. of Burlington, Elmer G. of Madison, Frank T. of Bartlesville, Okla., Burt S. of Burlington, Clarence A. of Chicago, Howard L. of Sands Springs, Okla., Mrs. Zella M. Pooler of Burlington, and Mrs. Bernice H. Lamb of Scranton, Iowa.
This aged couple had lived happily together for more than a half century, fifty four years.
