James M. Park was born in Fulton county, Ill., on April 24, 1839, departed this life Aug. 17, 1912 at his home on north Grove at Yates Center, Kansas.
On Feb. 11, 1864, he was married to Lucinda Marple in Sheffield, Ill. To this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters, David Henry proceeding him.
Those left with the wife are: Mrs. Ola Wood, Iola, Kansas; Mrs. Libb Park, Los Angles, Cal.; Mrs. Judd Martin, Deering, Kansas; Richard Emery and William Franklin of Yates Center, Kansas. There are eighteen grand children and one great grand child.
On August 24, 1862 at Sheffield, Ill., he enlisted in the civil war, was wounded in the battle of Mission Ridge, Tenn. He was discharged in Oct. 1864 on account of the wound.
In March 1874 he came with his family to Kansas and located six miles north of Yates Center. He donated the ground for the Pleasant View church, and lived there for 26 years, moving to Yates Center in 1900 where he resided until the time of his death, except last year he spent in California.
In early manhood he joined the Methodist church and has lived a consistent christian life.
On his death bed he expressed the faith and trust he held in the realities of the divine power that sustained him in the last battle he fought by singing many of the beautiful Christian hymns he had learned to love.
A chair will be vacant but our loss is his gain.
The funeral services were conducted at the family residence Monday morning at 10:30 o’clock by Rev. W. L. French, pastor of the Methodist church. The body was buried in Yates Center Cemetery.
