Was Pioneer in Kansas Grain Busi-

ness and Served Four Times

as St. Marys Mayor.

  John Floyd Buell, a pioneer grain dealer of eastern Kansas, died yesterday morning, shortly before 11 o’clock, at his home, 1107 North Monroe street.  Death came from an attack of heart disease from which he had been ill for the last nine months.  Mr. Buell came to Kansas shortly after the close of the Civil war and settled in St. Marys, where he started a grain elevator.  During the war he was a member of the 114th New York infantry.  He entered as a private and was first lieutenant when the war ended.

  For forty-five years Mr. Buell was one of the most widely known residents of Pottawatomie county.  He was four times elected mayor of St. Marys and served one term as police judge in that place.  In 1895 he served in the Kansas legislature as a Republican representative of Pottawatomie county.  He left St. Marys and moved to North Topeka thirteen years ago where he was appointed to the position of assistant state grain inspector.  He was assistant grain inspector up to the time of his death.

  He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Addis A. Buell; three sons, F. A. Buell, A. E. Buell and C. A. Buell, and two daughters, Miss Mola Buell and Miss Mona Glen Buell, all of North Topeka.  The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home, 1107 North Monroe street.  The Rose Croix of the Scottish Rite will have charge of the services at the home.  The blue lodge Masons and the Lincoln Post G. A. R. will conduct services at the grave.  Burial will take place in Mount Hope cemetery.  Mr. Buell was also prominent in Masonic circles having been a member of that order for fifty years.  He was 75 years old.
