John Wesley Mason Dies Here Follow-

ing the Amputation of One

of His Legs.

A rusty nail wound cost John Wesley Mason, a Civil War veteran of Greenwich, Kas., amputation of his left leg at the knee and resulted in death at a hospital here at 11:30 o’clock last night.

Mr. Mason stepped on the nail two weeks ago at his home in Greenwich. The nail penetrated the left foot. Blood poison developed and he was hurried to the hospital a week ago. The limb was removed last Friday.

The veteran was 79 years old, too great an age to withstand the shock of the operation after the illness.

Since 1858 Mr. Mason had been a Kansan. He served with the Tenth Kansas Infantry in Company E during the war, enlisting from Bourbon County in which he was a pioneer resident. He had been living in and near Greenwich for eight years, retiring from the farm a few years ago to a home in town.

The widow, six sons and two daughters survive Mr. Mason. The children are E. M. Mason, of Greenwich; Q. B. Mason, I. G. Mason and O. W. Mason, of Benton and Mrs. J. C. DeLong, of Greenwich. Three brothers are living, B. F. Mason and A. B. Mason of Uniontown, Kas., and O. B. Mason, of Modesta, Cal.

The body will be taken to Greenwich by the Wichita Undertaking Company for funeral at the Greenwich church at 11 o’clock Wednesday. Rev. Paul Rogers of Kechi officiating. Burial in the Benton cemetery.
