MALONE.

The funeral of Mart W. Malone was held at the Methodist church in Burlington Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev. C. W. Odom, the pastor, with interment in the Graceland Cemetery by the side of his several children who preceded him. Rev. Mr. Odom gave a splendid address in the life and character of Mr. Malone, and a mixed quartette sang several appropriate selections. A large number of old friends and neighbors attended the services.

Martin Walter Malone was born in Wexford, Ireland, July 29, 1837 and died January 8, 1921 at the home of his daughter in Pueblo, Colo., aged 83 years, 5 months and 9 days. Mr. Malone came to America with his parents when two years old. Here he grew to manhood and after completing his education was married to Miss Martha Virginia Dellinger, May 5, 1859, at Fairfield, Iowa. To this union were born nine children, seven boys and two girls. Four of the boys have already answered the Master’s call. Mr. Malone was a successful farmer in Iowa until he answered his country’s call for volunteers in the civil war, for he served two enlistments being discharged at the close of the war after more than three years’ service as a private in Company F, 3rd Iowa cavalry. When the war closed he returned to his farm in Fairfield where he remained for three years, then moved to Burlington, Kansas, making the trip in a covered wagon. Here he built his home which has been his happy home for more than 51 years. He moved into this house on North First street on Christmas eve 1869. After coming to Burlington he conducted a successful transfer business for more then 35 years. He was a freighter, hauling freight of all kinds from Lawrence and Ottawa before the railroads came to this section of the state. When his health failed he gave up active work and enjoyed his home and family.

Mr. Malone is survived by his aged wife, three sons and two daughters to mourn the loss of a most excellent husband and life’s companion, and the best and dearest of fathers. He also leaves several grandchildren and many friends. The surviving children are Mrs. Maggie Moore of Pueblo, Colo., Mart A. Malone of Eldorado, Tom P. Malone of Kansas City, Kansas, Edwin T. Malone of Florence, Colo., and Mrs. Ella Corwin of Gridley, who joined with their mother in extending their most sincere thanks to those who have been so good to them at this time as well as to the many who were so kind to their parents in their declining years. It had been Mr. Malone’s ardent wish that he might outlive his wife in order that he might continue to care for her, but she will continue to have the best of care from her children.
