MANY ATTEND DR. SWEANEY’S FUNERAL

The funeral of Dr. R. E. Sweaney, which was held at the Church of God yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended, hosts of people coming from the country to be present at the services. The doctor was an old soldier and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and his pall bearers were selected from among the members of the Chanute post. The post had nothing Else to do with the funeral but its Members were out in force. Dr. Sweaney was one of the first physicians in this part of Kansas. He came to Neosho county from Tennessee in 1868, and at that time was the only doctor between Yates Center and Fort Scott. He made many long trips in the early days, keeping up his practice until ten or twelve years ago. If the patients had not the means to pay him, it was all the same to the doctor, and it was said of him yesterday, by all who knew him well. “I don’t think that Dr. Sweaney ever intentionally wronged any man, in word of deed, in all of his life.” He was 78 years old, and leaves a wife and two children. His death was caused by a complication of diseases attendant upon throat trouble.
