Thomas E. Nation.

  Thomas E. Nation was born November 17, 1843, and died December 11, 1916, at the age of 78 years and 24 days, at his home six miles north of Mound City, on the farm on which he has resided for forty years.

  He was born in the state of Indiana, and in the year of 1847 with his parents he moved to Iowa.  In 1857, with a train of pioneers he emigrated to Kansas, where he remained until his death.

  He was one of a family of eight children, of whom only two sisters survive him---Mrs. Susan Shaffer of Pleasanton and Mrs. Sarah Ellis of Columbus.

  At the breaking out of the war he became a volunteer of the Sixth Kansas Cavalry, serving three years and receiving an honorable discharge.

  He returned home and March 17, 1867, he was married to Luvina J. Clark, of Harrisonville, Mo.  To this union were born six children of whom four survive him—Marion S. Nation of Mound City, Mrs. W. M. King of Mound City, Mrs. W. M. Jackson of Pleasanton, and Clarence Nation of Mound City.

  His wife dying in 1880, he was in 1882 united in marriage to Sarah Akers Mann.  To this union were born three children—Mrs. Louis Herman of Farhnville, Thomas E. jr., of Mound City and Calvin A. Nation of Mound City.

  In 1875 he united with the Methodist church.  Later he united with the United Brethern church, and remained a member until the time of his death.

  He leaves a bereaved widow, seven children, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with a host of relatives and friends to mourn the loss of beloved husband, father and neighbor.

  The funeral was at the Linville school house, conducted by Rev. E. N. Gause, assisted by members of the G. A. R. of Mound City.  The pall bearers were G. A. R. members.  Interment was made in Linville cemetery.
