  W. D. Slack. a veteran of the Civil war and retired farmer, died at his home, 1014 South Evergreen avenue, this morning at 2 o'clock after a very short illness of heart trouble, he having been sick less than a day.  He was about his home yesterday morning as well as usual and had recently returned from his farm near Urbana.

  Mr. Slack was born in Fulton Co., Ohio in 1842, and came to Kansas many years ago, residing in Piqua and Iola, coming to Chanute five years ago.  He is survived by a wife, one daughter, aged 18, two brothers, T. M. and J. F. Slack, and a sister Mrs. Hannah Pontius, of Ohio.  He served in the 68th O. V. I. and will be buried under the auspices of the G. A. R. Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at Elmwood cemetery. The service will be conducted by the pastor of the U. B. church.
