Wesley Wright was born in Wayne County, Indiana, Jan. 22, 1841, and died Jan 12, 1912.
His parents both died while he was still a child. He was married to Matilda Ballinger, May 3rd, 1861. To this union were born seven children. Of the family the wife and six children survive, one daughter having died two years ago at Muscatine, Iowa.
He worked at the tinner’s trade until in 1862, when he enlisted in the Union Army, in the 39th Iowa Infantry. He was elected First Sergeant by the company and was mustered out in 1865 as First Lieutenant, commanding the company.
After returning home he resumed the tinner’s trade, but in 1870 moved to Kansas and took a claim in Morris county. In 1874 they returned to Iowa and he worked again at tinner’s trade for a few years, then moved on a farm he lived the fall of ’83, when he was elected county treasurer, which office he held for four years. He served as deputy treasurer for three years.
In 1904 they sold their home in Iowa and moved to Cherokee, Kansas, which has since been their residence. Since he has been here he made many friends and was elected some years ago as police judge and at the time of his death was justice of the peace.
Funeral services were held at the family residence by the Rev. Harmon Allen and his remains were laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
