Old Soldier Gone.

 

  William Barker died at his home in north Eureka Thursday, January 14, 1909, aged 71 years, eight months and twenty-five days.  He was born in Illinois April 19, 1839.  In 1862 he enlisted in the regular army and served throughout the Civil war as a private in Company I, 62nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry.  In 1864 in Schuyler county, Illinois, he married Susan Lazzais.  To this union seven children were born.  He and his family came to Greenwood county in 1884 and here he resided until the time of his death.  His wife died in 1898.  The surviving children are Mrs. George Smith, of Bridgewater, South Dak.; Mrs. Geo Scates, of Attica, Kas.; and Mrs. H. P. Smith and William Barker of Eureka.  With the exception of Mrs. George Smith, all were present to attend the funeral.  Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Stephen Miller, were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. P. Smith, Friday the 14th.  Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
