William Henry Shattuck enlisted in the Union Army, Sixth Cavalry, Company D on August 17, 1861 at Trading Post, Linn Co., Kansas and served under Captain David Goss.  He was Second Lieutenant of the Company when his three-year enlistment expired then he joined New Company "A", formed of the same Regiment, and was discharged 18 Jul 1865 at DeVolls Bluff, Arkansas.  Fox was the name of William's horse that he rode during the Civil War.  William returned to his Valley Township farm in Linn Co. and married Mary Anstress Barnard on 8 Oct 1865.  William's personal servant, Moses McGlothlin, returned to Linn Co. with him.
___________
William Henry Shattuck Again the grim conqueror death, comes, and another sad event has occurred. William H. Shattuck died at his home, Friday morning, September 30 (1887), at
about 3 o'clock, aged 52 years, and on Saturday, the day following, the departed one was followed to the Sawyback school house by one of the largest crowds of relatives and friends, who deplored the loss of a loving husband, a kind father, and an ever helping friend in time of need. The funeral servcies were conducted by Rev. S.P. Cullison, with some very sympathetic remarks from Job, 16th chapter and 22nd verse, after which all paid their last tribute of respect.  The remains were then taken to the cemetery nearby and laid away to rest.  His death, though not unexpected, has saddened the hearts of the entire communtiy.  For the past few months the deceased has suffered untold agonies and has been confined to the house nearly the entire time. He was an old citizen, coming here from Rensselaer county, New York.  He was a first lieutenant in the Union Army.  His virtues and noble character elevated him on a plane above all reproach. The deceased leaves a wife and eight children (Grant, Alden, Jessie, Nettie, Clyde, Josie, Lenora, Ina) to mourn thier loss, but is his everlasting gain.  May the sorrows of his companiion be tempered by the remembrance of his sancitity in that home. LaCygne Jornal, October 8, 1887

Moses McGlothlin Mose McGlothlin, says the LaCygne Journal of April 15, 1927, is dead, and his
death marks the passing of another of the few remaining ones who knew the town in its infancy.  Born in slavey, his early days were spent with his beloved Marse and Mis'tis, and many were the interesting memories he could recall of those days.  At the time of the Civil War he was a boy of perhaps 14, and went through the conflict as the personal servant of Captain William Shattuck of Valley township.  At the close of the war he came with Captain Shattuck to Trading Post.  When W.H. Broadwell opened a drug store in that thriving little city Mose was employed by him to work around the store.  Soon after that he came to the new town of LaCygne and was employed by T.N.
Marshall to herd cattle.  But Mose had been reared as a house servant and soon was employed as waiter at the Dixon House which was the first hotel in the town.  At that time the building comprise the house as it now stands and the house just north of it which was later moved to its present location and two private residences made from the old hotel.  During the stirring times of the early days the Dixon House was a busy place, and many interesting tales of the wild customs of the time when whisky was a common beverage, Mose could relate.  One was of a patron who rode his horse through the wide front door and into the dining room, demanding immediate service, causing wild confusion in which Mose crawled under the table until order was restored.  A few years after when the old LaCygne House was of the railraod enjoyed a flourishing business and all passenger trains on the old Gulf railroad stopped there for meals, Mose was the headwaiter and many times has entertained children of later generations by calling off the bill-of-fare and citing in pantomime his
duties as headwaiter.  A born mimic, characteristic of his race, he could relate stories of early events that cause his hearers to live over again with him these early experiences.  He was kind and gentle and intensely loyal to his white friends.  Surviving him are his wife Ruth and daughter Maude of the home and son Harvey of Joplin.
