Bert Havens
Bert Havens, 72, died March 4 in his home in Wilmot. He was born Nov. 17, 1902 near Tisdale to James W. and Emma Havens. He married Goldie May August 8, 1922, in Winfield. He owned and operated the Wilmot garage for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Cecil Havens of Fairfax, Okla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Miles Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. L. Van DeMark. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Goldie E. Havens
Goldie E. Havens, 88, a former resident of Wilmot and Floral, died Oct. 9, 1993, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. She was born June 4, 1905, in Oklahoma City to Linder and Miranda Fawn May. She moved to Floral at age 9, where she attended school. On August 8, 1922, she married Bert Havens in Winfield. The couple lived in the Floral and Wilmot communities through out their married lives. The couple owned and operated Havens Garage in Wilmot for 39 years until his death March 4, 1973. She also served as postmaster of the Wilmot Post Office for a number of years.
Mrs. Havens moved to Winfield in 1975 and had resided at Good Samaritan since 1979. She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Winfield.
She is survived by her son, Cecil, of Cleveland, Okla., four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today. A memorial has been established in her name with the Burden Senior Citizens. Contributions may be made at the funeral home. Miles Funeral Service is Winfield is in charge of arrangements.

Gary Havens
Gary R. Havens, Rt. 1, died at 4:20 Sunday morning at the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, as the result of a motorcycle-car accident on Winfield and College Streets Saturday evening.
He was born Feb. 11, 1942, at Wilmot, the son of Bert and Goldie Havens. On April 28, 1963, he married Jeanie Harris, Burden. He was employed as Fire chief at the Winfield State Hospital.
Survivors include his widow and two children, Dale and Tammy, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Havens, Wilmot; one brother, Cecil Havens, Burden; and a grandmother Mrs. Minerva May, Wilmot.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Burden Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Bateman officiating. Interment will be in the Wilmot Cemetery. Miles Mortuary of Burden has charge.

Joshua Havens
Joshua Ray Havens, 3, 626 South C St., died Monday (Feb. 18, 1991 at his residence. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 21, 1991) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Alvin Snodgrass officiating. Burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery, Wilmot.
He was born Jan. 15, 1988 in Wichita to Dale and Sheri (Burgett) Havens. Survivors include his parents; his sisters, Tiffany Shae and Reeva Shane, all of the home; his grandparents, Jeannie Krug, Wichita and Gary Havens, deceased, and Melody Lindenman, Arkansas City; his great-grandparents, Carol and Louise Harris, Burden and Palmer Lindenman, Jay.

NORMA MOSS HAVENS
NORMA MOSS HAVENS, 74, of Bay City, Texas, former longtime Burden, Kansas resident, passed away Monday morning, October 25, 1999.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.
Havens was born September 12, 1925 at Atlanta, Kansas, to Harvey and Bernice (Williams) Moss. After attending Atlanta area schools, she worked in Atlanta and Winfield restaurants.
On February 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Cecil O. Havens at San Miguel, California, and they resided in San Miguel.
The Havens lived in Burden, Kansas during the 1950s and 1960s. She owned and operated the Burden Cafe, and later was employed with Henderson Drug Store.
They lived in Fairfax and Cleveland, Oklahoma before moving to Bay City, Texas. Havens owned and operated her own ceramics business in Fairfax. He husband died Nov. 30, 1998 on November 30, 1998. She was a longtime member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, James O. Havens of Cambridge; a daughter, Veita K. Miguez, Bay City; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 1 step-granddaughter.

James O. Havens, 50, of Cambridge, died Feb. 7, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 20:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Havens was born March 5, 1949, in Winfield, to Cecil Owen and Norma (Moss) Havens. Raised and educated in Burden, he was a 1967 graduate of Central High School in Burden.
In 1972 he married Karen Bailey. They later divorced.
In 1989 he married Tammie Tapia, and they also divorced.
A career carpenter and welder, Havens was employed for many years by various building contractors in Kansas. He resided in Rock and Douglass before moving to Cambridge in 1996.
He was a member of the united Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Tara Taylor, Arkansas City, and Carrie Havens, Pittsburg; a sister, Veita K. Miguez, Bay City, Texas; and two grandsons.

Cecil Havens Havens
Cecil Havens, Bay City, Texas---Cecil O. Havens, 75, of Bay City, former longtime Burden resident, died Nov. 30, 1998, at Bay City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Havens was born July 29, 1923, on a farm near New Salem, to Daniel Bert and Goldie E. (May) Havens. He was raised and educated at Wilmot. As a young man, he was employed as an auto mechanic in the Wilmot and Floral areas.
Havens served for three years as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Feb. 11, 1944, he married Norma Gene Moss in San Luis Obispo, Calif. They made their first home in San Miguel, Calif. Havens was employed for several years as a mechanics instructor in automotive schools in California.
In 1951 he began employment as a welder and roustabout for Texaco Oil Co. The Havenses lived and worked in Burden during the 1950s and 1960s before moving with Texaco to Fairfax and Cleveland, Okla. Havens retired from Texaco as a field foreman in 1983, following 32 years of service. The family later moved to Bay City.
A longtime member of the Burden United Methodist Church, he was also affiliated with the Masonic Lodge of Burden for 37 years.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Havens, Bay City; a son, James O. Havens, Cambridge; a daughter, Veita K. Miguez, Bay City; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.

George Washington Bowman
BOWMAN ---- George Washington Bowman died Tuesday at his home in Floral, Kansas, at the age of 85 years and 30 days. Mr. Bowman was a pioneer resident, having lived in Cowley County the past 25 years. He lived a number of years at Eaton and Tisdale. He is survived by two sons, Ed, of Floral, and Joe of Arkansas, and one daughter, Emma, of Floral. Burial was made in the Tisdale Cemetery Wednesday.

Mary M. Havens
Mrs. Mary M. Havens, 65, wife of Charles N. Havens of 0334 Massachusetts, died Monday at 12:25 p.m. in Newton Memorial hospital. She had been a patient there since Dec. 13th.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Christian church with Rev. Glenn Shoemaker officiating. Burial will be in Tisdale cemetery with Swisher-Taylor funeral home in charge.
Mrs. Havens was born March 11, 1892 at Elm Springs, Ark., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Huffmaster. She was married to Charles Havens April 20, 1921 at Elm Springs. She had been a resident of the Wilmot and Floral communities from 1921 until moving to Winfield in 1944. She was a member of the Christian Church and of the Army Mothers.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Sherman L. of Arvin, Calif., and John W. of Winfield; two brothers, Hal and Joe Huffmaster of Springdale, Ark.; three sisters, Mrs. N. P. Norman of Eureka Springs, Ark., and Mrs. Tom Harris of Springdale, Ark., and Mrs. A. C. Fogle of Denver.

Nina Bowman
Died. Sunday, February 16, at the family home three miles west of Eaton, Mrs. Nina Bowman, aged about seventy-six years, after a short illness of la grippe, terminating in pneumonia. An aged husband, two sons, James and Ed and a daughter, Mrs. Emma Havens survive to mourn the loss of a loving wife and a devoted mother. Owing to the serious illness of the daughter only a short service conducted by Rev. Stone was held at the grave Tuesday and she was laid to rest in the Tisdale cemetery. The friends and neighbors sympathize deeply with these friends in their sorrow.

Frances Emma Havens
Mrs. Frances Emma Havens, 80, resident of Cowley county for the past 44 years, died at her home in Wilmot Sunday morning. Mrs. Havens, born in Hamilton county, Ohio, was married to James W. Havens at Fayetteville, Ark., Jan. 4, 1892. To this union were born two sons, Charlie and Bert of Wilmot. Survivors include the two sons, one brother, Ed Bowman of Winfield, a niece, a nephew and five grandchildren.

Ed Bowman, son of George and Nina Bowman, was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, July 13, 1867 and departed this life at Wilmot, Kansas, March 19, 1947, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 6 days.
He was the last of a family of three children, James Bowman and Emma Havens both deceased. He had lived in Kansas about 51 years. He was a steam engineer by trade. He remained single his entire life.
He is survived by three nephews and one niece; Bert Havens of Wilmot, Charlie Havens of Winfield, Fred Bowman of Hutchinson, Mrs. Eugene Lane of Compton, Calif., and a host of friends and neighbors. Graveside services were held Friday afternoon and burial was in the Tisdale cemetery.

J. W. Havens
Former Wilmot Garage Man Dies During Heart Attack....J. W. Havens, former garage operator at Wilmot and a long-time resident of the Tisdale and Wilmot communities, died about eight o'clock Wednesday morning at his home in Wilmot. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Although Mr. Havens had been in failing health since last summer and his condition was serious, death was unexpected. Mr. Havens was about 70 years old at the time of his death.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed but services will probably be held Thursday or Friday afternoon.
Surviving Mr. Havens are his wife, two sons and four grandchildren of Wilmot and community; a half-sister, Mrs. Mary Tutcher of Overbrook, and two half-brothers, Frank Byerley of Mapleton, Kans., and Richard Byerley whose address is unknown.
Mr. Havens has been a resident of Kansas most of his life. He was born in Pleasant Hill, MO.

Funeral services for James William Havens, 70, who died Wednesday morning at his home at Wilmot, were held Thursday afternoon from the Tisdale cemetery, with Ed Gann, Burden mortician, in charge of the services. Mr. Havens, a former Winfield resident, who had lived at Wilmot for the past ten years, had been ill for several months. Pall bearers at the service were Harry Stevenson, Alvin Conrad, O.C. Hold, Charles Caton, L.H. Dunbar, and Otto Kerting. The Floral quartet sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Nearer My God to Thee." The following obituary was read at the service: "James William Havens was born at Pleasant Hill, Mo., Nov. 20, 1866, and died March 10, 1937. He was 70 years, 3 months, 18 days old. He left Pleasant Hill at an early age and moved to Overbrook, Kans., where he lived until he was about 25 years old, when he went to Arkansas. "Jan.4, 1892, he married Frances Emma Bowman at Fayetteville, Ark. To this union two children, Charlie and Bert, were born. He and his family remained in Arkansas until March, 1896, when they moved to a farm 12 miles east of Winfield. They lived there until February, 1911, when they moved to Springdale, Ark., and lived there until December, 1913. They then moved to Winfield. The remainder of Mr. Havens' life was spent in Cowley county except for two months spent at Conway Springs. "He is survived by his wife, his two sons, both of Wilmot, a half-sister of Overbrook, two half-brothers, whose addresses are un-known, four grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, and a host of friends"

Charlie N. Havens
Charlie N. Havens, of 0334 Massachusetts, died at 1:07 a.m. Tuesday at Newton Memorial hospital, where he had been admitted Monday.
He was born Jan. 5, 1895 in Washington County, Ark., the son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Havens. He was brought to the Eaton community when 1 year old. The family later moved to the Wilmot community and since 1944 he had lived in Winfield.
He was married to Mary Huffmaster on April 20, 1921, at Fayetteville, Ark. She died Jan. 6, 1958. Survivors include 2 sons, Sherman of Arvin, Calif., and John of Winfield; a brother, Bert Havens, Wilmot, and 7 grandchildren.
He retired 3 years ago after service as a grain inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was known to many as an old-time fiddler, especially at the time of the Kansas Centennial. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Swisher-Taylor funeral home.

PETE ALDERSON
PETE ALDERSON DIES EARLY MONDAY MORNING
P. L. (Pete) Alderson, 90, a Kansan for more than 65 years died Monday at 4:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since March 7. He had been in failing health for a year.
He was born July 19, 1858 at Green Sulphur Springs, W.Va., the son of L. N. and Margaret Alderson. Nov. 24, 1881, he was married to Alice Gwynn, and after their marriage they came to Burden where they lived until 1911, when they moved to their present home a mile east of Winfield. He had been a farmer all of his life.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Zirn N. Dunlap; son, F.T. Alderson, El Centro, Calif., 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Morris Funeral home. Rev. C.A. Kitch will officiate. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Alice Alderson
Mrs. Alice Alderson Dies at Dunlap Home
Mrs. Alice Nora Alderson, 92, died Monday at 8 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Z. N. Dunlap, 1110 E. Ninth. She was ill a little more than an hour.
Mrs. Alderson, widow of the late, P. L. (Pete) Alderson, was born in Green Sulphur Springs, W. VA, Feb. 25, 1860, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Gwinn. She was married in 1881 to Mr. Alderson, and they came to Kansas and settled near Burden where they lived until 1911, when they sold their farm and bought an acreage one mile southeast of Winfield. The tract is now a part of the Binney & Smith holdings.
Mr. Alderson died April 4, 1949, and since then she has lived with her daughter. Besides Mrs. Dunlap she is survived by a son, Fred T. Alderson of El Centro, Calif.; 6 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be announced by the Morris Funeral Home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. P. L. Alderson were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Swisher Mortuary. Officiating were the Rev. C. A. Kitch and the Rev. W. E. Shuler. Miss Frances Frey was soloist.
Burial was in Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were George Harrison, John Meier, Frank Brown, Floyd Bolack, Omer Shively and Lee Price.

ZIRN N. DUNLAP
ZIRN N. DUNLAP DIES AT HOSPITAL
Zirn N. Dunlap, 68, 1110 E. 9th, died Wednesday at 11:47 p.m. at Newton Memorial hospital. Dunlap had been in failing health for two years and had been hospitalized a number of times, being admitted for the last time on Aug. 8.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Morris Funeral home. The Rev. George W. Richards will officiate and interment will be in Union cemetery.
Dunlap was born in Elk County, July 2, 1888, son of Joseph and Harriet Dunlap. He was married to Bess Alderson, Oct. 28, 1911, and they came to Winfield from Elk County in 1913 when he established the Walnut Valley Produce Co., which he operated for a number of years. He retired in 1926, and since then had been active in oil and gas leasing.
He held membership in the First Methodist church, BPOE, Rotary and the Winfield County Club. He was an avid sports enthusiast and was active in the Winfield Quarterbacks club as long as his health permitted.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Helen McCoy of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Barbara Hayden, Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. Betty Jo Coffman, Wisner, Neb.; one sister, Miss Emma Dunlap of Wichita, and 14 grandchildren.

BESS DUNLAP
Mrs. Bess Dunlap, 84, of 1119 East 9th, died this morning in William Newton Memorial Hospital. She was born September 19, 1890 in Burden, KS to Peter and Alice Alderson. She married Zirn Dunlap October 28, 1911. He died in August 1956. In 1912, they moved from Elk County to Winfield where they operated the Walnut Valley Produce Co. for a number of years.
She was a 53 year member of the First United Methodist Church. She belonged to the Green Meadow Golf Club, and she was a charter member of the Congenial Pastime Club. She did volunteer sewing for William Newton Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Helen McCoy of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Barbara Hayden of Saratoga, Wyo., Mrs. Betty Jo Coffman of Limon, Colo.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Morris Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Paul Mugler. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her name with the First United Methodist Church.
