I was born in Winfield 1940, and grad. from Winfield High School in 1958. My Father was Bernard McCartney and he owned and operated the White Star Lunch ( or better known as Bernie's). I don't know when he started the cafe, but probably long before me. He died in the early 1960's. The cafe was located on East Eighth behind the Calverts store, what is now I think the 101 building. I also became interested in genealogy a few years ago. Just wanted to say hi.

Morgan m. Jennie Ergenbright. He was born December 1857 Springfield,
Ill. She was born in Iowa. They owned a farm in Cedarvale twnsp. and their children were born there from 1880 to 1900. The other one is Josiah Will Spurgin, born Cowley Co. 1880. This is all the information I have on these families. I would appreciate any information regarding these two families.

27 JAN 1891. He was married to Dolly Carter. I think they lived in Rock,
Kansas, in Cowley County. They had a daughter named Viola Jane
Hippensteel on 20 DEC 1916. They later moved to Michigan.

Looking for information on the family of Madison Brown "Matt" (1858-1930) and Hester (GOODWIN) 1867-1945 MILLIGAN. They had three sons: Carl (b. ca 1880), Claude G. (b. 1882) and Charles C. (b. 1884). One was a druggist, one was a salesman and Claude was a lawyer in New York (what burrough?). Does anyone know anything about them or where they ended up? Also, Matt's brother, Jesse Peeler "Pete" MILLIGAN (1850-1932) and his wife Sarah HANKINS (1861-1944), who had six children. Matt and Jesse owned and operated Famous Shop Shop in Winfield. Jesse's son Everett apparently kept the business going; he d.1966. Also, who is Milf MILLIGAN who was living with Jesse in 1910

Looking for an Army captain from Arkansas City
In 1962 and '63 I had the pleasure to serve with a fellow named Warren Jay Willcoxen from Arkansas City. His family as I recall ran or had an
interest in a trust company or savings and loan located there. He was an attorney serving at Ft. Hood, Texas, and I would like to find out whatever happened to him. Have been unable to locate any information.

In Nov 1920, Mark and Nellie sold the farm, (6miE/4.5mS of Winfield, 9m W of Dexter), realizing $1715.42 at the auction (12 horses, 32 cattle, 8 hogs, 250b corn, 8T alfalfa, 350T prairie hay, 11 acres can in shock, tools and accessories), and moved to California, where:

I am the second son, (and third of six overall) of this union.
My curiosity was piqued recently when I obtained a copy of the flyer for my grandfather Mark's 1920 auction, as well as a typewritten balance statement. I noted that there were three others named Fox (Luke, Chas. and Ed), as well as Theo., Earl, and C.A. BELTZ among the winning bidders. A scan of recent events in Cowley County indicate there remain folks of both of these names present, though I have no clue as to the relationship (if any exists at all).

I am seeking information about Guy Wood born 1883 and raised in in easter Cowley County and his trick horse, Colt Hamilton. His dad was John Wood of of what was once Hooser, Cowley County, Kansas. At about the turn of the century and up to about 1906 he travel with a small traveling show/carnival to various towns in sourthern Kansas and North eastern Oklahoma.

Saw your geoealogy page and noticed you have COOK's in your family, probally not related to mine but they did live and die in Winfield. They were a David Cook and his wife Laura Kohler. My next job is to find the cemetary where they were buried, if you have any ideas where to start I would welcome them. (David died in 1935). I live in Clearwater, KS so a trip their is to big a deal as long as I have some clue as where cemetaries are in that area.

I understand that there was a state census done in Kansas in 1895.
Do you know someone who could do a lookup on it? I am looking for
Eliakim S. WILSON, who was probably living with a brother, Eri Albia WILSON. Eliakim's pension papers show him living in Burden in 1895. These papers show Eliakim as dying there September 19, 1897. Any recommendations as to how to locate death certificate information and an obituary? Any help you could lend would be greatly appreciated.

HAMMON, INGLE, TEECE, MANSELL, BRAUN/BROWN
I would like to know if there were any mines in Cowley County around 1885 and if so, where they were located? If not, where were the nearest mines? I am looking for information on my gr grandparents George INGLE b.1834 England and Emma TEECE b.1834 England who were supposed to have lived in Cowley County, KS in 1885. I have been unable to determine where they lived or find any record of them at all in Kansas.
My grandparents Oliver Granville HAMMON (b. 1858 Athens Co., OH)and Ellen Jane INGLE (b. 1870 Marshall Co., IL) were married July 2,1885 in Udall. Their marriage certificate states that both were residents of Cowley County.
Ellen's father George INGLE was a miner and so were two of her
brother-in-laws (Timothy MANSELL b. 1851 England and Adolf Wilhem
BRAUN/BROWN b.1857 Germany).
This family worked as miners in England before 1864 and in IL from abt. 1864 to 1885. In 1888 to 1895 they were miners in Johnson and Logan Co's in AR and by 1900 Choctaw Nation in OK working in the mines.

My ggg grandmother, Mary Homesley MULLIN died in 1872 in Cowley Co., Ks. No one has been able to tell me if she's buried there, if there was family there or who she may have known there. Her husband, (William Martin Mullin,) died in Dade Co., Mo. in 1866, but something took her to Kansas. Does anyone know anything about her? Does her name or surname ring a bell? I am searching for my great, great grandfather, Samuel Johnson. He was
born in West Virginia (in Marion or Harrison Co) circa 1834. He married Ann Saunders from Harrison County, WV who was about 20 years his junior. The 1870 census has Ann living at home with her parents in WV. I can't find Samuel anywhere in WV. Some family records indicate that Samuel was living in Arkansas City around 1880 - 1890. Family stories say that he was a preacher and sent his family back to WV. He was to follow but did not. His wife remarried circa 1894 and gave birth to another child in 1895. I assume Samuel was either dead or disappeared at that time. Any information?

Seeking descendants of Oliver Alva PRATT and his brother Robert B. PRATT. Oliver lived in Cowley County from 1870s until his death. Robert lived there at various times between 1876 and 1893. A complete list of their 24 children (and spouses) appears in the "PRATT-BROWNFIELD" section of my website (address given below). group photo probably taken shortly before or after 1900 of a threshing crew in Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas. Charles, James B., and John Cooper were all brothers--the sons of Lycurgus and Martha Cooper -- who lived in Republic, Cowley, and Cherokee Counties at different times ca 1880's-1920's. Charles, James and John were all born in Ohio, moved to Mahaska County, Iowa and then to Kansas together. John also had a twin sister, Elizabeth. Have no info on Elizabeth. There was also a sister, Samantha Driggs who lost children that are buried somewhere in Cowley County, who moved along with them. Lycurgus settled in Jasper County, Mo. and died there in 1891. James B. died in Springfield, South Dakota, Charles died in Kellogg, Idaho, Samantha died in Valley County, Idaho, and John died in a fall from a tree in Burden in 1912. I'm sure there are decendents of these people still living around the Cowley and Cherokee areas. Would love to get in touch with them and fill out the family lines. Will be glad to trade information with them.

I Live in Minn and have some family in that area. I am looking for a death date for Dorinda Pace Damewood and also would like to know if an obit would be available between 1875--1880. She died and I would like to find the cemetery and grave of Granville Damewood and Dorinda Pace Damewood. There is other Damewoods there also. SURNAMES: Staggers and Coles
I am researching 2 of my families in Cowley County - The Staggers and the Coles. The Staggers (Adam Staggers) moved to the Mt. Vernon area (northwest of Winfield) around 1880, farmed there for a number of years and then moved into Winfield (around 1905).
The Cole family (George Spencer Cole) homesteaded around Sealy (near Udall) around 1876 and then later one of the sons (my grandfather George Harvey Cole) bought a farm 4 miles north of Winfield.
Would be happy to correspond with anyone working on this group. I do have some press clippings from that era.

I have been looking at the 1885 Cowley Co., KS Census. I found my family listed in Ninnescah Township with Udall listed as the Post Office.
