Date: Saturday, September 25, 2004 05:55 PM

I'm trying to find information about my grandfather, Lucas Pier, who was killed in a mining accident at the age of 27, in late 1911. He was listed as Luka Per on the Ellis Island ship registry of 1906, traveling to East Mineral, KS, to stay with a brother-in-law named Mosselt(?). I would like to know more about the circumstances surrounding his death, i.e., what coal company he worked for, which mine he died in, etc. I would also like to know if he had any next of kin in the area. My father, Frank Pier, is still living at 92, but does not know much about his father's kin.

Topic: Phleps and Casad
From: Leila Schutz leila726@yahoo.com
Date: Thursday, September 16, 2004 09:38 PM

I am looking for any information on my father and mother and their parents.

My father was C. Wayne Phelps or Charles Wayne Phelps. He was born in 1910 in Crawford, KS and later became judge of the city court in the late 1930's. I would like to know more about his career there. My mother was Patricia Phelps born Patricia Palmer. Her family was from Joplin, MO but her grandparents lived in Pittsburg and she spent much of her time there, eventually marrying my father there. They left Pittsburg during WWII because my father was doing war work and never returned there to live.

My grandmother, Orlena Casad then Orlena Palmer, was a school teacher before her marriage and I would like to learn more about that period in her life. I have one, very damaged photograph of her in her classroom with her students and I'd love to find more.

Orlena's father was Orla Casad. He was also a judge and seems to have had a distinguished career in the city. Any informaton anyone has about him, or photographs, would be greatly appreciated. His wife was Allie Babcock or Allie Casad. I'm looking for information about her too.

One of the Casad daughters stayed in Pittsburg until her death in the 1970's, her name was Ethel Larkin but she was commonly called Kicki (sp?). Again, any information would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Leila Schutz leila726@yahoo.com

I'm seeking information for August THIBAUT, wife, Mary (APPLEMAN/APPELMAN) THIBAUT and children, Dave, Flora, Olive (Leva), Fernon and Anna.
August was a coal miner in and around Pittsburg ca. 1880-1905. He immigrated to the U.S. from the French-speaking part of Belgium (exact area, unknown). He also worked the mines in Bates Co. MO in the Rich Hill area where at least two of his children were born. (This was found in the 1910 WA census at Ravensdale.)
I would very much appreciate any information (no matter how small) to help me locate this family.

Topic: William H. COLLINS
From: Janice Williams gennutjkw@bigfoot.com
Date: Saturday, May 15, 2004 06:29 PM

Seeking information on William H. COLLINS who was the second husband of my great-great-grandmother, Pamelia Margaret TAYLOR WALKER. They married in Crawford Co. on 28 July 1876. The Marriage License identifies the groom as "William H. Collins of Baker Township aged 43 years"; and the bride is identified as "Permelia Walker of Baker Township aged 42 years". William died in Crawford Co. (prob. in Cherokee) before 24 Oct 1876, when the probate of his estate commenced.

Apparently, William was married prior to the marriage to Pamelia, as his probate papers include payment requests for medical care provided for 2-3 children. One probate document mentions seven (7) heirs; but the only name given in any of the documents is James E. COLLINS (a minor), who became the ward of Pamelia's son, Martin Franklin WALKER.

Crawford Co. Quit Claim Deed Records (Vol. G, p. 373) contains a deed for "Undivided Half (being dower) W. H. Collins Estate NE 1/2 22-30 25". Grantors were Panlina [sic] BUNCH & W. T. [sic] BUNCH, and Grantee was W. A. Black. (NOTE: Pamelia married William Penn BUNCH on 31 Oct 1878, place unknown. They lived and died in Wellsville, KS.)

No surviving family members knew of the marriage between William COLLINS and Pamelia until I found the probate papers and marriage record. If possible, we would like to locate descendants of William and his first wife, and learn more about the COLLINS family.

(:~ HAPPY HUNTING ~:)
Janice

1893Mar24. Ms. Vista LAKE, reportedly born in MO on 24 March 1893, is said to have been the daughter of Mr. Albert Ross LAKE (b: abt. 1867 in MO) and Sarah Ann KOCH (b: abt. 1871 in Missouri). Ms. Vista LAKE is said to have married Mr. Ralph Franklin KENNETT (b. 19 Sep 1891 in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS). Their wedding reportedly took place on 31 May 1910 in Girard, Crawford Co., KS. Their children were:

1. Glenn Gilbert KENNETT b: 15 Aug 1911 in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS.
2. Walter Ross KENNETT b: 6 Aug 1914 in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS.
3. Joe Dale KENNETT b: 8 Sep 1917 in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS.
4. Melvin Albert Roy KENNETT b: 28 Jul 1926 in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS.

1930Apr11. Ohio-born widow Anna Lake (73, b. circa 1857) was residing with her Missouri-born, never-married son Roy Lake (43) in Baker Township, Crawford County, Kansas at the time of the 1930 U.S. Census (April 11, 1930, page 208, residence 755, family 767). Baker Township (37 degrees 24' 24" North; 094 degrees 40' 27" West) is located at the southeastern edge of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS. Anna's father was reportedly born in Pennsylvania; her mother, in Ohio. Roy's father, in Illinois; his mother (in accord with her report), Ohio. According to the record, Anna had been 18 years old when she first married. This record implies that Anna was born circa 1857 and was married circa 1875.

I just found the following information. It seems likely that the "Sarah KOKE" described below in an 1860 census is the Anna/Sarah Ann (KOCH) LAKE who was living in Baker Township, Crawford Co., KS at the time of the 1930 census.

1860Jul25. The 1860 census of Union Township, Scioto County, OH, taken on July 25, 1860, listed the "KOKE" [Koch] household (Dwelling 957, Family 957). The six persons living in the household were: James Koke, Ohio-born white male, 29 years, farmer, real estate valued at $500 and personal estate valued at $200. Living with him were Pheba Koke, Ohio-born white female, 36 years; Jesse Koke [Jesse Koch], Ohio-born white male, 11 years, who had not attended school during the last year; James Koke, Ohio-born white male, 7 years, who had not attended school during the last year; Rebecca Koke, Ohio-born white female, 4 years old; and Sarah Koke, Ohio-born white female,1 year old (1860 Census, Ohio, Scioto County, Union Township, Portsmouth Post Office, Page No. 140, Dwelling 957, Family 957).

I recently found my ggg-grandmother Sarah Arner in the 1900 census. It says she was a hotel keeper at the above address. Also included in the census were her two grown daughters, a grown son, a servant and nine boarders. I had never heard that she managed a hotel. Does anyone know anything about the hotel or boarding house at 115 3rd St.? Is it still there? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
