SMITH MORTON DIES AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS
PASSES AWAY AT FOUR O'CLOCK MONDAY
AFTERNOON: FUNERAL WEDNESDAY
SMITH MORTON, who lives in the southwest
part of Oberlin died quite unexpectedly Monday afternoon at four o'clock,
after having been seriously ill only a few hours. Some
interference with his heart action causing his death.
About 11:30 o'clock Mrs. Morton heard Mr.
Morton calling for her, and found him lying on the floor of the garage,
unable to rise. She assisted him to the house where he recovered
somewhat, but a doctor was soon called and under his ministrations, Mr.
Morton was apparently recovering, when an obstruction seemed to develop
in the blood circulation and death ensued at four o'clock.
Henry Smith Morton was born in Meigs County,
Ohio October 4, 1862, and departed this life October 15, 1928, aged 65
years and 11 days.
He grew to young manhood in Ohio and came to
Kansas in center Township near Kanona and lived there till the fall of
1914 when the family moved to Oberlin.
He was married to Elnora Caster, October 21,
1886. To this union five children were born: Howard who died in infancy;
Mrs. Hazel Westfall and Mrs. Grace Ropert of Oberlin; Mrs.
Gertie Gloss of Colorado Springs, Co.; and Neil W. Morton of La Junta,
CO.
The deceased leaves a loving wife, four
children and a host of friends to mourn his departure. He was a
kind and loving husband and father. He was honest and upright in
all his dealings and all who knew him were his friends.
Funeral services were held from the home
Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. O. G. Brown (a former neighbor of
the Morton family) of the Hoxie M. E. Church in charge. Burial in
the Kanona Cemetery.
