James Vernon

James Vernon was born May 10, 1839, in Washington County, Ohio, and departed this life December 31, 1926, at his home in Jennings, Kansas at the age of 87 years, 7 months, 21 days. In early life (as a child he was a part of the Quaker faith) he united with the United Brethern Church at Pleasant Grove, MO., and later he united with the Friends Church and ever remained a faithful member to the end.

He was united in marriage to Sarah S. (Stires) Lambert of Washington County, Ohio on the fourth day of April 1861. He with his family was one of the pioneers of the west having come here in 1879 (actually he was in Sherman, Furnas, NE in 1880). To this union eleven children were born; sir (six) of whom are living and five children and his companion preceeding him in death. His companion departed this life April 10, 1923. in Bent County , Colo. (buried in Jennings Cem.)

Those living are Laura R. Jarvis and J. H. Vernon of Oberlin, Kansas; Martha A. Boyer, Redmon, Oregon; H. R. Vernon, Longmont, Colo.; Emma G. Martin, Danbury, Nebraska and James Arthur Vernon of Jennings who with his wife faithfully cared for him in his declining years. He had been in very poor health for the past year. He was a faithful companion, a loving father and a good neighbor; to know him was to love him. He also was the last one of the Vernons in his generation. He had three brothers and two sisters that settled here with their families in an early day. Out of these families two sisters-in-law; Mrs. Will Vernon (Clarissa "Clara" Dew) and Mrs. Ben Vernon (Eva Rodman Chappell) of Norcatur and ten nephews and nieces with families follow him to his last resting place.

He leaves to mourn his departure six children, 37 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; and a host of friends.
