JENNIE ELIZABETH MORTON JOHNSTON
From the Oberlin Herald
January, 1960

Jennie Elizabeth Morton, daughter of John and Almeda Morton, was born January 6, 1870, in Meigs County Ohio, and departed this life in the Decatur County Hospital on January 27, 1960, at the age of 90 years and 21 days.

She was left motherless at an early age.  She spent her childhood in Ohio, coming to Decatur County at the age of 15 years with an older sister, Mrs. John (Martha Ann) Askins. She made her home with her until her marriage to Robert Moses Johnston on February 9, 1887.

To this union six children were born who live to mourn the passing of a kind and loving mother: Marvin Johnston of Cope, Colorado, Anna Hill of Oberlin, Orpha Bosler of Denver, Colorado, Oren Johnston of Oberlin, Millard Johnston of Kansas City, Missouri and Josephine Bosler of Oberlin; also 25 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her husband on August 16, 1931.  Orpha Bosler and Mrs. Marvin Johnston were unable to attend the services because of illness.

She and her husband resided on a homestead that he had formerly taken four miles west of Oberlin.  She knew the trials and hardships of a pioneer's life, but she was a true pioneer and never tired of telling of early-day life to her many friends and relatives.  She joined the Methodist Church at Shibboleth in 1913 when the family resided in that community, later transferring her membership to the Oberlin Methodist Church.

She, with her husband, moved to Oberlin in 1923 where she has since resided.

She had been in failing health for several months and was cared for in her home by her daughters.  All was done that loving hands could do, but she passed quietly to the Great Beyond on Wednesday at 4 p.m.  Although not wholly unexpected, death came as a great shock to her family.
Services were held at the Methodist Church Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Bressler. The body was laid to rest in the Oberlin cemetery beside her husband amid a host of sorrowing relatives and friends.
