WILLIAM VERNON

William Vernon was born in (Bern) Athens County, Ohio, August 30, 1845, and departed this life at his home in Norcatur, Kansas, on his 74th birthday, August 30, 1919. He was united in marriage to Miss Clarissa Dew, December 19, 1867, and to this union 12 children were born, four dying in infancy. They were pioneers in Decatur County, coming here and locating on their homestead northwest of Norcatur in 1884, where they lived with their family of children until the spring of 1919, when Mr. Vernon and wife moved to Norcatur where he hoped to take life easier and be close to their children. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted at the age of (18 in Co. B 145th OH INF) nineteen, and served with the Hundred Day Men, was honorably discharged and again enlisted in (at the age of 19) Co. I, 194th regiment O. V. I., and served his country until the close of the war.

In 1886, he united with the United Brethren Church as a charter member at Mt. Vernon, near his home and remained a member and served faithfully until death.

Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. Church in Norcatur and burial following in the Norcatur cemetery, September 2nd. The funeral sermon was delivered by his old pastor, Rev. W. P. Smith of Smith Center, Kansas, assisted by his present pastor, Rev. W. H. Hill, and Rev. A. L. Groseclose of the Lutheran church, Norcatur. The scripture lesson was read from Luke 12:22-40.

Those left to mourn are a loving wife, and eight children, Mrs. Laura Haden of Rexford, Kansas; Mrs. Etta Swayne of Republican City, Nebr.; Mrs. Olive Robinson of Kanorado, Kansas; Mrs. Zella Pennington of Lebanon, Nebr.; R. B. Vernon, Mrs. Mae Wood, Mrs. Bessie Gallentine, and Roscoe Vernon of Norcatur, also three brothers (David, James and Benjamin) and twelve great grandchildren.
