We are searching for any information re: Albion Hathaway HARRIS (MD) (b 1847 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia) who married in 1881... we believe in Kansas, and his obituary in the Liverpool Times even states in Dodge City (although undocumented)... married to (2) Annie Gertrude MACLEOD (b 1860 Liverpool, NS).  We know they had twin girls Irma and Alta in  Ellinwood, KS (Barton County?) in 1887...  We understand he lived and practiced medicine in Hays, KS after 1887 (Ellis County?) and then moved and practiced in Dodge City, KS (Ford County?) later than that.
Could other HARRIS family members have been in these areas who share our HARRIS information?

We are trying to confirm the family migration pattern and marriage location, as well as to locate burial location for Albion (d 1896-1898 near Campbell, NE).  Any information is appreciated.

Sheri Beffort-Lantzy Saturday, April 14, 2001
I am searching desperately for information on my father's family.  Specifically - his father, my grandfather and his ancestors.  This is what I know:  EDMUND ROBERT BEFFORT - b. 24 Jan 1913 in Munjor, Kansas.  He had 3 sisters that I am aware of:  Pauline, Catherine and Mary.  It is possible that my grandfather, for some reason, added an "F" to the original surname.  Instead of BEFORT he changed it to BEFFORT. If anyone could lookup his birth record for me, I'm sure all kinds of information would be available and let me start looking in the right direction.  Thank you.  sherilantzy@altavista.com  sherilantzy@netzero.net

I am trying to verify the date of death, place of death, and burial site for my great great grandfather.  His name is John Averett, he was born in Pitt County, NC in 1834.  I have found records of three different spellings of his name: Averett, Averitt, and Avery.  He joined the Confederate Army on February 18, 1862 in SC.  His military service record has his name spelled Averett and indicates that he took the Oath of Allegiance on January 22, 1864 at Point Lookout, MD and then joined the U.S. Army.  Family stories tell me that he was then transferred to Fort Fletcher (Fort Hays), Kansas and that he died on March 29, 1866 without ever returning home.  I have checked with the Ellis County Clerk's Office and they tell me that they didn't start keeping death records until 1886.  Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how I might be able to verify his date of death and find his burial site?  Thanks.

Clark Jones Tue 8 Aug 2000
For 120 years my family has been trying to find out anything about my great great grandfather. His name was George Newton Jones. He was married to Mary Caroline Ptomey and had three children, the first in 1878. He disappeared around 1882, and his wife died a year or two later of typhoid. His children were always told that he had died, but later research indicates that they may not have been told the truth. The connection to Ellis co. is that he supposedly was a carpenter who helped build the railroad roundhouse in Ellis, KS. The Rooks Co. census of 1880 says he was born in Iowa about 1853. Iowa does not have birth records prior to 1880, so I can't find him that way. We don't know where he died , so we can't get a death certificate. His brothers in law, one of whom raised his children, refused to talk about him.

I am looking for info on my very large family. The names I'm researching are: Gassmann, Knoll, Kreutzer and Linenberger. I have literally hundreds of names, but am missing many places and lots of dates.

Vicki Harris Richardson Fri 21 Jul 2000
We are researching the family of * WILLAM PENN MONTOGMERY who came to Hays in the mid 1870's, previously had lived at Lawrence KS, and before that Beaver Dam Wisconsin for a short time (1850) and was born in Westfield, New York in 1822, the son of James Montgomery and Sarah Taylor.

* WILLIAM PENN MONTOGMERY and wife * SARAH HALL MONTGOMERY had 5 children: * DAVID, * FRANKLIN, * MARY, * ELLA, and * WILLIAM Jr. William Penn was an attorney and had a law practice in Hays, part of the time in partnership with his son in law, * FRED J. HARRIS, the husband of ELLA, that specialized in land cases. Willam Penn and his son FRANKLIN also owned and operated the HAYS SENTINAL newspaper, selling out in 1882 to J H Downing, of the Ellis County Star. William Penn's daughter MARY (Molly) married * HILL P. WILSON, who was instrumental in Hays land development and the owner of the Bank of Hays City, opened for business January 1, 1880, being the first bank. H. P. Wilson was later elected to the Senate 1889, 1891.

Of the sons * David and * William Jr. I have no leads, other than David was reported in William Penn's 1895 obituary as living in Colorado. The son Franklin settled in Topeka, and the daughter Ella and husband Fred Harris went to Junction City. Mary and husband Hill P. Wilson stayed in Hays City and had at least one son, possibly more ?, Hill P. Wilson, Jr.

In the 1880 Census, the very first family listed in Hays Township is JOSEPH H. HALL b. NY, and family, who I am pretty sure was the brother of Sarah Hall, Willam Penn's wife, and the son of David Hall of Westfield, NY.

We would love to hear from other family researchers. Vicki Harris Richardson GVRichards@aol.com

I have in my possession a 2-3/4 by 4-1/4 card commemmorating the death of a woman named KAROLINA BENTON. She was born 10 Apr 1852 in Herzlada, Germany and died 15 Apr 1917 in Walker, Kansas. This card has been in my family for many years. We have always assumed that she was a relation of my great great grandfather JOHN BENTON. However, after migrating to the U.S. in the 1870s, he lived in Muskegon, Michigan until his death in 1919. Can anyone help me? Anna Sullivan from Youghal, County Cork Ireland came to the United States in 1850 with two brothers Timothy and Murtha and their mother whose maiden name was Gallagher. Already in the US were her brothers John (a traveler) and Daniel who stayed east in NJ. Anna and her brothers and mom settled in Chicago, Ill. Eventually Anna married her boyfriend from Ireland - Charles McCarthy. Together they left for Emporia, Kansas to homestead. They had three sons, one of which served as a Kansas State Senator - Daniel McCarthy. Daniel married Kathryn Ellen O'Loughlin in 1933 (I think), and one daughter who married an architect named Green.  Kathryn was from Hays and I believe passed there as well.

I have heard that Charles operated a business selling farm machinery and money left in his will went to help build a new church.

Anna was my gg grandfather's sister. Would like to know when Anna was born and passed and where, as well as Charles. Need the names of the two older boys who went and started a farm machinery business in Mankato. Also birthdates, family info, dates of death if applicable/cemeteries and any other info you can share.

Also would like info on Kathryn's family. I read somewhere that the family had some type of car business.

Mark Bernard Miller Thu 17 Feb 2000
My father's parents were Paul Bernard Miller and Magdalene (I believe) Miller. My father was born in Ellis on March 20, 1923. He had 12 brothers and sisters and lived on a farm. This is about all I know. I am not sure where they lived or when or where my grandfather and grandmother were married or when they were born or died. Most of my father's brothers and sisters are dead and I have not had very much contact with any of them at any time in my life. My father never talked much about his childhood as it was very difficult, as you well know, during that time in Kansas.

I have never tried to do any type of family research and I am not sure how to proceed. I would assume that since I can go back as far as my grandparents, the next step would be to try to find out what happened to them and where they were born and attempt to go back another generation.   I would appreciate any help you could provide.

Looking for information on Heinrich/Henry PAUL and his first wife, Anna Maria BRUNGARDT, who came to US from Louis, Russia in 1876 and settled in Catherine, Ellis Co., KS. They brought with them two children, Anna Maria, age 9 and Heinrich, age 10 months (I believe his name was actually Jacob). Another son, Michael, and daughter, Mary, were born while they were in Catherine. Anna Maria died in 1891 and Heinrich returned to Russia and married her sister, Barbara BRUNGARDT. They returned to Catherine where they lived until they moved to Marienthal, Wichita Co, KS sometime prior to 1900. Before the move to Marienthal I believe Henry's daughter Anna Maria also died. I am particulary interested in finding Henry's sister, possible first name Barbara (unknown married name) who lived near them at Catherine and moved to Marienthal at the same time they did. She and her family later moved to Canada and all contact was lost.

Searching for ancestors and descendants on the HANNAN / HANNON family, including various other spellings. Frank HANNAN was believed to have been orphaned at a very early age. Sent to work in Kansas, possibly to live with some relation? Franks parents are unknown, but his father was believed to have been of Irish descent coming through Canada and mother of Irish descent in Missouri. (This is all speculation at this point)

Frank HANNAN b. abt. 1880 St. Louis, Missouri married Sarah E. KUHN abt. 1900 in Ellis, Kansas. Frank was listed on the 1910 Ellis County Census as working for Keand Drill (? hard to read spelling) Anyone ever heard of this company? Together Frank & Sarah (Sadie)had 12 Children: Clarence b. 1900 Kansas?; Frank b. 1902 Wyoming?; Joseph b. 1904 Ellis, Kansas; Roy b. 1907 Ellis Kansas; Robert Henry b. 1909 Ellis Kansas; Francis b. 1910-1911 Kansas; Thomas Eugene b. 1912 Big Creek Ellis, Kansas; Madge b. 1913 Ellis, Kansas; Frank & Sarah (Sadie) moved to Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas where they had 4 more children: Dorothy b. 1917 Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas; Kenneth b. 1919 Hutchinson, Kansas; THE TWINS Ona Fern (F) and Ole Laverne (M) (my Father) b. 26 June 1921 Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas.

1920 Reno Census list Frank as Unemployed and Sarah (Sadie) as a cafe cook. The family moves next to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The only link I know of for sure in this HANNAN / HANNON line is the fact that Frank HANNAN had inherited a disease known as HUNTINGTONS CHOREA (now known as HD), which in turn was inherited and passed on by several of his children. I am attempting to search this line back, without much success! Any help or information you could provide on the HANNAN / HANNON FAMILY would be greatly appreciated. Are there other HANNAN / HANNON lines with the same disease in their line? For further information on HUNTINGTONS and the research being done please see Huntington's Disease at the link below. Frank HANNAN died in 1937, in Clarinda, Page, Iowa, Huntington Disease http://hdsa.mgh.harvard.edu/huntingtonsdisease.nclk

I have a land tax receipt from Treasure's Office, Ellis County, Hays City from 1886 that I've been trying to research but have come up empty handed. The last name on the receipt is Dalton but I'm unsure of the first name. The receipt number on the document is #857 and was issued 12/13/1886. I wish I could give you more information but it looks as though a doctor wrote this. The amount was for $45.00 of first installment on what looks like 640 acres. This document was found in Maricopa, California. I'm curious to know wheter or not this is any relation to the Dalton Gang. I know that one of the Dalton's lived in Hollywood and one in Sacramento. Maricopa fits in about half way between. Could you help me out on this? It would be fun to know.

Harvey James PENNEY was born in New York on 10-12-1865 and moved with his parents, James PENNEY/Mary Ann NEISH sometime in the late 1800's to Ellis County at Hays City (sometime prior to 1895). He married Ellen Cecilia MAGRANE in Hays City on 2-4-1895. Harvey was an owner or manager of the Brunswich Hotel and Ellen was postmistress under T. Roosevelt's administration. Desire any information that any genealogy society, or other sources in Hays or Ellis County has on PENNEY/NEISH. Would be interested in the Catholic Churches and cemeteries active in the late 1800's to early 1900, and what Death, Marriage, Sacramental info they might have...County records on deaths in the same time periods, etc.

My grandfather was Grant Wilson HARRIS, born July 23, 1888. I know that he did live in Hays, Kansas, between the year of his birth and when he married in Texas in 1915. (If someone can do a look-up?) I believe that it was his job with the railroad that brought him to North Texas, where he met/married Emma ENDSLEY in Cass County (North of East Texas). Grant had at least two brothers that I know of: Monte (Montgomery) H. HARRIS, born 1886, married Amy (unknown) and was living in Joplin, Missouri, at the time of his death in 1968. William HARRIS, born Aft. 1889, married a lady named Bertha. "Bill" and Bertha were living in San Antone, Texas in 1969, no word of their deaths. The mother of these HARRIS men were supposed to have been a music teacher. I have her picture, but no picture of a father. I believe there may have been another brother named Fred. Reply please to Vicki Harris Richards - GVRichards@aol.com.

I have been researching my wifes family for several years and have never been able to find any data on her GGrandfather, William A. HAMILTON, who lived in Hays, Kansas for several years.  Circa 1870 -1875. I know that two of his son's were born there but haven't found any documents to confirm the dates and location.  He may have run a General Store while there as he had one later on in the state of Washington.

His wifes name was Louise L. (GALLOWAY) HAMILTON. They had two son's with them,  Ira and John HAMILTON (by his first marriage) . Also two other son's were born in Hays, Kansas while they stayed there. They are as follows:

Ashford HAMILTON   b. 25 Jun 1871,  Hays, Kansas
Motz HAMILTON        b.15 Feb 1875,  Hays, Kansas

The family left about five months after Motz was born.  They went to California and then to Washington State where he founded a town called "Hamilton".

The 1870 Census films that I looked at were in such bad condition that I could not read half the names.  Perhaps there are some records located in Hays that might relate to this time period.  If you or someone you know could help me in this matter I would greatly appreciate the help.
