Gove County Kansas

Swedish Evangelical
Lutheran Cemetery

NW 1/2 of Section 12 Township 15 Range 30
Lewis Township

The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery is located on a hill one half mile north of the rock church, a plot of about two acres. Some of the graves had only native rocks placed at the head with no engraving on them. The grass around the cemetery was worked and planted to wheat and cane. During the thirties, the dust storms covered the rock markers. The dirt piled up along the north fence and went to the south. Some years ago, this dirt was cleaned off and the ground leveled, and they found the rock markers in a few places. Thelma Lewis Bretton provided the initial information with additions made by Kathryn Ford of Leoti, KS, who is a descendant of the Norells and Petersons. Leona Anderson Woods and F. Ray Lewis furnished additional information.
